Exhibiting the work of Renaissance poets other than Shakespeare, Williams's 1963 anthology features many lesser known names as well as a few of the playwright's famous contemporaries. The poems of Skelton, Gascoigne, Googe, Greville, Drayton, and more mix with those of Spenser, Sidney, Donne, and Jonson. In stark contrast to the convoluted style of the writers inspired by Petrarch's sonnets, many of the native- or plain-style poets are surprisingly touching in their economy and frankness. My then thesis advisor taught this class. High expectations. He had done his reading at Oxford when the 16th & 17th century compilations were being worked on, was a friend of Robert Pinsky and a classical pianist to boot. Equally adept at teaching 19th century literature and culture. No pressure or anything... The love he showed to poems is like nothing I have ever seen before or since. To this day gorgeous lines of poetry roam through my thoughts thanks to Henry.
