   The author evokes Hemingway's Paris of the 1920s and his Lost Generation after World War I, but "Champagne Haze" brings its own stories and melancholy. We're reminded of the incredible impact that insane war had on the world, and surely on the characters in this novel. They're a mess, really, with devastating loss and sadness and alcohol-infused revelry like the college chums they could never be again. I can't say that I liked or could trust any of them in their current state, but then maybe that's the point, the struggle to put the past behind and find hope in the future. The author describes a beautiful Paris with scenery, settings, and even restaurants and bars that we can still enjoy today. For a brief moment in time, it seems the entire city is hopeful, including the mix of hungover French, British, German, Russian, and American lost souls, trying to move on. Perhaps all is not lost after all.
