It's a little silly at times and there's some hilarious fourth-wall breaking here and there, but ultimately this is a great book to introduce the fundamental teachings of the Buddha for someone interested in learning them, including some practical application examples for regular people (not isolated monks). Still, it can serve as an aide. :)

Entertaining, accessible, insightful, and relatable. This takes a look at Buddhism as applied to common personal scenarios. I know little about Buddhism, so this book is a good introduction to Buddhism, touting its benefits when applied to your life. My only problem with this book is that it was not bingeable for me. The ideas needed some time to roll around in my head for better understanding.

The art is cute and I appreciated the slice of life stories, though I sometimes wondered if all of the characters were behaving as they really would. It's a nice introduction to the main Buddhist concepts, but unfortunately reads a little too much like a self-help book. I think I'm looking for something heavier. Trying to learn a little about Buddhism is a daunting task. It is 2,500 years old and has as many truths as believers, at least. I wanted to read some of the actual words handed down from the historical Buddha but without a framework to understand how Buddhism is grasped today I was unsuccessful in making progress. Still, this view of Buddhism seems different in emphasis if nothing else from the Shin Buddhism and Zen Buddhism I have previously encountered. The pictures are functional in maintaining reader involvement and the facial expressions are surprisingly good at conveying attitude. It is broken down into chapters each of which tells a meaning-packed story. I was surprised to see Abraham Lincoln make an appearance! I want now to move on to something like Donald Lopez' book of Buddhist Scriptures.

There is nothing basic about Buddhism--it goes way beyond karma (which people often misunderstand) and vegetarianism (some monks ate meat...but that's another story). Trust me, I took graduate level courses about Buddhist philosophy and WOW! I saw how little I REALLY knew about the subject. The characters that need to "learn" the most are usually women and some might find that insulting, but please remember Japan is still very much a patriarchal society, so keep an open mind and focus on the philosophy rather than the stereotypes. This is a great book that I will certainly keep close and reread whenever I need a refresher. I would recommend this book to teens and adults.

I thought this book was just great. It's a really quick read, but it's amazing how well it can break down some really complex topics into simple terms that anyone can understand. I don't have much experience in Buddhism, but from what I've read so far, I'm a big fan of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. This book took those teachings and helped me understand them in ways I hadn't grasped before. I thought this book was just great. picked this up in chinatown last week - it contains a decent amount of engrish, but that didn't distract from the books message about the virtues of being super-mellow. picked this up in chinatown last week - it contains a decent amount of engrish, but that didn't distract from the books message about the virtues of being super-mellow.
