The story follows Sabra Valentine as she's thrust back into her past fears all while trying to move on with her life. I really liked how Sabra's character was depicted and how we got to see every anxiety inducing worry she had played out. The realistic portrayal of her fear made the book even more intriguing and had me gripping my Kindle and feeling just as anxious as Sabra's character. The best part of this book was the raw and unfiltered fear that came off of the pages whenever Sabra's past was brought back into her life.  The fact that Sabra's character was so realistic, though, actually made me want more details of her past. And maybe that's my gruesome, true crime loving brain but there were times that it just felt like the story was holding back because we were getting hints at her past and seeing some of it but not the truly bad parts of it. For me that actually took away from the story and at one point even had me wondering if I was wrong in what I thought had happened. Overall, this was an amazing book to read and I will certainly be waiting for more from this author. The romance blended really well with the suspense and I adored Sabra's love interest, Trevor, and how he didn't get pushed too far in the background. The main focus was definitely Sabra and her story but Trevor added a lot of interesting moments. ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review

It was in your face, but there was much consideration and tact to it. Sabra is in a place in her life where things are finally starting to fall into place. She is attending college, auditioning for acting gigs and has a very close friendship with Trevor. She has a gut wrenching past, that included both sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of someone who should have loved her and kept her safe at all costs. Not ruin every aspect of her childhood. She has kept her childhood nightmare to herself. Her best friends knows something happened, but not many details. Her parents are oblivious. One other person knows her darkest hurts, the one who inflicted them upon her. She allows herself to finally blossom and to try to actually live. Especially since her personal nightmare is serving prison time. A place she helped him get to. She needed to be able to feel a little safe and to be able to breathe. She needed to regain her life back. Her best friend Micah is the only one she allows in, but beyond that her heart, feelings and trust stay very close to her. She doesn't share any piece of herself beyond the basics. But.... with Trevor, things are starting to feel different. Starting to feel safe. That he could be that safe place she has been yearning for so, so long. Trevor, Trevor, Trevor... Oh my gosh, this man. He is perfect. I am not sure he has any flaws. Like truly. The author wrote him so well. So much so that he has won my heart. He knew Sabra was skittish, but is allowing her to open up to him on her terms. He doesn't pressure her, just allows her to truly fall and to trust him. I seriously adored them. One phone call shatters her world. Her nightmare is out and coming home. Two hearts want her. One wants to control and hurt her. To continue to break her. One wants to keep her safe and love her forever. To love her the way she deserves. This books is grips your heart and doesn't let go. It will break it, crush it and you'll feel like it can't ever be put back together. That's where the hope comes in. Not everything is darkness and fire. Not when you have a Trevor on your side!! Looking forward to more by this author!

We've all heard the stories on the news or through others but for a reason I can't explain, Dunbar's book made it all more real and personal to me. "Nine Steps." Dunbar does a great job of giving us the details without laying all the gory details out for us. I know for some, they may want that more dark and twisted part to make the book more suspenseful, but it wasn't needed. You can tell that Sabra has a very hard time talking and rehashing her past and that shows through the past reflections. And I think that's why not having those descriptive details works with this book - the character can't handle that and if Dunbar were to go that deep into it Sabra's memories, we would lose the true character of Sabra. Trevor - oh that boy is a Saint. And I know any mom's out there would love for their young sons to turn out to be just like Trevor. Sabra and Trevor started out as friends four years ago when she first arrived at college. Trevor has always wanted more, but respected Sabra and her reasons for not wanting to ruin what they had. Sabra has always expressed that she's not a commitment type of gal and Trevor has seen that over the years. His loyalty to Sabra won me over immediately - even as a friend, he was there for her. Dunbar wrote a very real and personal story. Her characters and their story really helped in making this book feel more alive. While I know that those who love their psychological thrillers to be a bit darker, I think that Dunbar still keeps the thrilling suspense alive with just the minute details she gives - it adds to the appeal of not knowing everything. I hope Dunbar continues to write as I would love to read another novel by her.

3.5-4 stars! I have to say I am pretty proud of Dunbar for having a dream of one day writing something and then writing one heck of a novel in Used. Everything that transpired felt authentic and real and I felt the fear our heroine Sabra felt—the fear of the unknown, of the potential of what could come, and the fear of trying to escape and to finally be free. I loved her hero Trevor who relentlessly pursued her but at her pace and who validated her worth to her time and time again. This may be Dunba 3.5-4 stars! Sabra and Trevor are so sweet together. When she gives him her trust it's such a beautiful thing. Just to see her shine and thrive in their relationship. There is hope through love. Real love - not something perverted, twisted, and shameful. Mrs. Dunbar has written this novel beautifully. I think even if it might be a hard subject for some one - it's still doable in this particular novel. It's not detailed nor is it the center focus. It shows the reader how Sabra overcame her fears for love. Oh how beautiful it is, too.

After years of abuse Sabra is finally coming into the light with Trevor by her side. It was beautiful to listen to her learn to trust in Trevor and find real love. There were so many twists and turns that I felt as though I was on an emotional roller coaster that wouldn’t stop and let me off. This is a powerful story of determination, of overcoming the horrors of ones past and learning to live, love and trust again. The narration drew me in and brought the story to life for me. Stella Hunter certainly did justice to the characters. I was amazed to learn that this is Kate Dunbar’s debut novel, what a book to start her career on.

Kate manages to tackle an exceedingly difficult and dark subject about Physical and emotional abuse. It’s not an easy read at times and it leaves you with no question at all as to what Sabra went through but it was written with such thought, huge amounts of consideration and so much understanding. You will feel every pounding heartbeat, share every single tear shed, and feel everything Sabra experiences throughout this story as I held my breath and felt my heart break for her so many times. Whilst Sabra still to this day carried the pain and fear from her past within her she showed such strength and determination in not allowing her past to hinder her future and she is so beautiful inside and out. She has a wonderful best friend in Micah and undoubtedly the most amazing boyfriend EVER who both love and support Sabra unconditionally. The patience and understanding Trevor shows throughout the book was absolutely beautifully written. He was a true gentleman and all I will say is I fell in love with him instantly. Alongside the dark side of the story was the most gorgeous love story that developed throughout the book, it was delightful to see them grow as they broke down the walls that stood in their way. Once I started this book I could not put it down and devoured it in record time and couldn't I wait to for the audio to hear Stella Hunter tell the story and I wasn't disappointed. Stella was the perfect choice to bring all the characters to life. Thank you so much Kate for the ARC and ALC and sharing your story. Overall, her performance of this story kept me captivated the entire way! Kate Dunbar's debut novel was haunting and alluring in all the right ways. This book has some triggers, so I encourage you to listen to the beginning of the novel, to make sure this is the right book for you. This story will leave a lasting impression on your heart, and will give light some tough topics, that are so worthy of being aware of! I don't want to say much more about the storyline because I think this is a story you need to experience for yourself. This story needs to unfold by itself for each reader so you get the full effect and emotion behind this story. Used is a standalone novel and is told solely from the female POV. Most of the story is told in the present time frame but we are given some chapters from the past to fill in the blanks of what happened to Sabra. I really loved how this story played out and how the author wrote the story. You could feel everything Sabra was feeling and my heart broke for her so many times. But I loved that she had her best friend Micah to lean on and also Trevor...who to me is the ultimate book boyfriend. I absolutely fell in love with him. I loved his strength and determination when it came to Sabra. We don't see many Heroes like him these days. As for Sabra....she was one broken heroine. She had every right to be and I loved how far she came throughout the story. I almost wish there would've been an epilogue for the story to show us how she is doing a couple years down the road. I would 100% recommend this book. But just be warned that this isn't an easy story to read. But I loved the story of hope and healing that she took Sabra on. What a unique story! This wasn’t what I was expecting. I guess I wanted more of the before than the during but I appreciated the characters in this story. I really liked the indecision of the main character and everything she went through. The end was the best part in my opinion! I would definitely read more from this author

Not all books affect people the same, we all know that, and this book might not be anything other than a read you spend an afternoon enjoying. A suspense filled romance with character that are the greatest. A book with writing that really keeps your attention and secondary characters just absolutely fall for. For some of us though, this book was healing. We fell in love reading it and got terrified when things got scary. This isn't an overly emotional book, heck it isn't an overly mushy or heart wrenching, its a book about facing a fear and prevailing. This novel is a story about a girl who is going to do all she can to live her life. A girl who despite her own protests, deserves to love and be loved in the most perfect way. She deserves her night and by goodness I fell in love with him too. I spent half this book falling in love and the other half hoping I was as good a Sherlock at reading as I hoped I was because If I was going to be killed by what was coming, I wanted to prepare myself. From the very first chapter I loved Sabra. She was fresh and sassy, and everything I love in a character that reminded me of myself. Then we had the rest of the story. My heart broke and I cried reading this, I wont lie, but in the end, I was THAT GIRL. The one throwing my fist into the air and screaming YES, because I got the validation I wanted and it was Sweet. Thank you for sharing your story Kate. I wont allow you to not give us more. <

We met online many years ago and fangirled over books together. I can’t even tell you how excited I am that I am sat here writing a review for her debut novel. When she reached out to me to tell me she was publishing Used and asked if I would like to review it, I jumped at the chance. And I am so, so, so glad that I did. Used was everything I didn’t know I needed in a book. It was utterly brilliant. Used follows the story of Sabra. Sabra has a mysterious past and she never lets herself get close to anyone. As soon as someone starts to show feelings, she bounces. But there’s just something about Trevor that she can’t let go. But when her past comes back to haunt her Sabra doesn’t know what to do. How can she move on with her life when her past is just one step behind her. Now, I love a good thriller but I don’t actually read them all that often. I’m a fantasy reader through and through and usually contemporary novels or romantic thrillers can take me awhile to get into because I’m used to reading lots of magic etc. That did not happen with Used. Right from the very first chapter I was completely sold on this book. I was sucked right into Sabre’s story and I was on the edge of my seat dying to know what was going to happen next. One thing I loved about Used the most was that we are technically reading two stories at once. We have present day with Sabre’s love story and turmoil over her family and we also have the past of what happened between her and her horrific brother. Kate has the most incredible writing style. It’s so powerful and fantastic. She had me swooning and gushing over Trevor one moment, and then my stomach was in knots and I felt like I couldn’t breathe the next, when we went back to Sabre’s past. It takes a really talented and phenomenal story teller to do that. And that is what you get here, a moving and stunning story written by an incredible storyteller. Used was everything I could have wanted in a Romantic Suspense book. It was filled to the brim with swoon-worthy moments and it had to terrified to continue reading, scared of what was to come… but at the same time unable to put the book down. I loved every single moment of this book. It was absolutely incredible. Kate has cemented herself at the top of my auto-buy authors list. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. If you want a fast-paced, action-packed, thrilling, terrifying, yet sexy and beautifully romantic story then look no further. Used is in a word… perfection! I loved it! “I want a present and a future with you, sweetheart. We can’t ignore the things that have happened or were done to us in the past. They have helped mould us into who we are today. And I love who you are today.”

I knew this going in and thought I was prepared for what this story was about. Let me tell you, this book is so much more than what I was expecting. Ms. Dunbar has written a book that is filled with moments of agony and pain unlike any I’ve felt in a very long time. Sabra, our Heroine is a woman that has lived through moments in her life that could truly end some people. But she continues to fight to find a happiness she thought was just out of her reach. One of the things I love so much about this book is that Ms. Dunbar leaves things to our imagination. She leads us in the direction of what’s happening at that specific moment but doesn’t reveal everything which for me made those scenes so much more intense. I let my imagination run, picturing in my head what was implied as happening and nearly every single time, I cried. I cried in anger for what Sabra was experiencing and I cried with the pain that she was living with. But in the darkness of this book are many moments of happiness thanks to Trevor and Micah. Both of them are Sabra’s best friends and they bring a lightness and reprieve from the heaviness of her life. Trevor is the man that loves her, but Sabra doesn’t feel like she deserves to be loved by this man, especially when the suspense of this book makes her question if it will ever be over! Micah is a girl that is the friend we all want in our lives…. She loves Sabra no matter what and will always be there for the light and very dark times. I highly encourage you to read this book. You won’t be the same when you get to the end. If you’re like me you’ll be amazed at what I’ve come to find out is something that is not talked about enough in our society and I’m guessing is happening and/or has happened to someone you know. You will be overwhelmed with the beauty of this painful story and like me, anxiously awaiting what comes next from what I’m confident is an author that is on her way to the top of indie book community.

Used is a solid debut from Kate Dunbar. It definitely isn’t an easy read but it’s also one that is hard to put down. The book goes from present to past where we get little snipbits of what transpired between her and her brother Lucas when she was just a child and she does so well to keep that secret by trying to live as normal a life as possible until she gets the call that Lucas has been released from prison. He’s back and he’s back for her. Sabra’s strength and courage throughout the book is an inspiration and I instantly fell in love with Trevor who treated her so well it brought tears to my eyes. My only wish after reading this book is that everyone who has been through something like this will finds some happiness and peace again and maybe even a Trevor of their own💕 This book was provided to me through audio by Little Dog Press and narrated by Stella Hunter for an honest audiobook review.

It took me a while to get into this book. The subject matter is hard to listen to not because of any triggers I have just because that breaks my heart. Knowing it had a darker theme helped me got prepared. The love story is sweet patient and kind. I loved that even though Sabra pushes Trevor away again and again. When the first roses appeared, then the writing, I guess then is when I expected her to say something. But she didn’t. Trevor was delicious and I am so glad we got a good guy for Sabra. He was still manly, he wasn’t a push over he was perfect for Sabra. I really enjoyed the narration as well, the male voice was good not over done at all.

Used was haunting. It was beautiful. And I know it’s a feeling that won’t leave anytime soon. Sabra’s story is emotional, raw, and hopeful. At least it was in the end. It’ll embed itself into your very being. It sounds contrite but I’m changed. The power that Dunbar was able to evoke through words had left me breathless. At times my stomach was in knots but in the end I felt whole. Trevor. There aren’t enough words to describe him adequately because that man definitely is a hero. He’s patient an Used was haunting. Overcoming any sort of abuse can be a battle that one may feel can never be won. I felt the author handled abuse with the utmost care and respect for those that have gone through situations like these. So thank you for that! I loved this book so much and can’t wait to see what journey Kate will take us on next. *Thank you to the author for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. I enjoyed Used, the debut novel by Kate Dunbar. I loved the suspense element. I did have a few theories and was keen to find out if they correct. Well, it turns one, yes! But the rest, not really! lol Some of the subject matter meant it's not an easy read at times, and there was a particular character that I want to punch well, actually probably a little more than punch, that's for sure, and so I was glad about the way things turned out for him. This is a debut novel by Kate Dunbar and she didn't hold back. I felt every single emotion and was cheering her and Trevor on from the start. Sabra is a survivor and Trevor is a real life hero. 3.50 Stars I have to say for a debut novel this was a book that captured my attention from the start. My heart broke for Sabra, but also I wanted to strangle her. She had people who wanted to be there for her but she kept pushing them away. And man Trevor #sigh This guy was just the sweetest and he never gave up on her. He wasn’t overwhelming but he was there and just kept on coming back and kept on building her up all the time, absolutely loved it 😊 I would like to see what this author does next, 3.50 Stars I have to say for a debut novel this was a book that captured my attention from the start. The entire book I was waiting for something that never happened!! 😕 If I had read the blurb again before starting the book, I'd have known Sabra was abused by Lucas for 10 years. But, unfortunately, I didn't (my bad!)... so I kept wondering if Sabra was indeed abused by her brother... or not. It was never explicitly mentioned; you (the reader) had to draw your own conclusions all the time. Just like the end: I think Lucas was killed by the police?? Again, no details (besides a white sheet). And maybe I have read too many books with explicit violence, rape and abuse? 😁 Maybe this book was meant as a heart wrenching, sweet love story about a damaged girl and a very sweet guy, who find their HEA despite the girl's dark past?? 💕 Because, IMO, that's what this book was! I wasn't sure about anything I read in this book; a book where you have to read 'between the lines'.... and I prefer to read the actual words (details about the abuse, the violence, the blood, the dirty sex). I don't want to have to make it all up myself. 😏 Because I had to interpret everything myself, my thoughts kept moving in different directions. I was beginning to think Sabra made everything up herself, the notes, the writing in blood, the abuse.... In my mind I was working towards a killing spree, violence, a bloody ending!! 🩸🔪💀🪓💣 But it never got 'that good'! 🤣 So, definitely not a bad story... but it didn't meet my expectations... especially not for a book tagged as 'dark'. Hence my rating of just 3 stars.

Used is Kate Dunbar's debut novel. Kate is a fellow blogger who was writing this novel for many years. I'm excited to see her make her dreams of publishing come true. Used is a gritty and haunting tale of sibling domestic abuse and one woman's journey toward stability and happiness. Kate's delicate treatment of this subject matter was very well done.  I'm looking forward to reading her next interconnected standalone. This emotion-packed romantic suspense is one-click worthy. I found this to be a very quick and enjoyable read. It has a very heavy topic and deals not only with physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, but the after affects and how it ruins a person inside and out. The gritty details were left to be filled in your head, and then to brighten the mood the author gives us interactions between Sabra and Trevor. The romance between them brings fire to the pages. Unfortunately, it also takes away from the gravity of Sabra's situation. The readers want more romance, more sweet words and swooning and love. It allows the dark part of the story to be taken less seriously. Especially since Sabra and Trevor are so immersed in each other that even when Sabra is clearly terrified, all her worries are forgotten fairly quickly. As for the abuse, it is hard to take in and understand. With so many details left unsaid, readers can easily overlook it. It was brilliantly written, don't get me wrong. The author did a great job with the mood swings, need to be in control, and the volatile temper. It definitely left me scared for Sabra and even Trevor, though he only ever seemed slightly concerned. Lucas' character was a master at hiding what he did, until the end. I just wish we had more of the dark facts, the ones we can't ignore. Overall, this is a read I do recommend if you like dark stories that keep a good balance with a light and happy tale!

Her 3.5 stars This is an emotional and suspenseful read with great characters and a beautiful romance, and it’s a really impressive debut from Kate Dunbar! 24-year-old Sabra Valentine is living wild and free after a childhood spent being tormented by her older brother. At the age of 17 she set things in motion which eventually saw Lucas put into prison, and since then she has been embracing her life, moving from man to man, never allowing herself to get attached and experiencing all that she can. Her latest fling is Trevor – a man who has been one of her best friends for four years, and the one man that Sabra could see herself falling for if she were ever to allow herself to fall in love. Trevor pursued her for a while before she agreed to start something with him, he knows her patterns and the games she plays with men, and he is determined not to be one of them. And now that he’s been given the chance for more, he’ll fight to get beyond her walls and win her heart. “I’m here. Whether you like it or not, you’re stuck with me. I’ll prove to you that you’re worth it. I will make you see what I see.” But then, Sabra receives news that her brother, Lucas, has been released from prison, unleashing a flood of emotion and outright fear as Sabra relives the nightmare that is her relationship with her brother. We see glimpses of Sabra’s childhood through flashback, and it’s scary and disturbing. Nothing too graphic happens on the page, but the story alludes to emotional, sexual and physical abuse, so beware that this may be triggering for some readers. As Sabra descends into horrifying terror, Trevor fights to be by her side to help her through her torment, and OMG, he just may be the perfect man. Determined to be there for his girl, he fights not only her demons, but also the walls that she has put up to protect herself. He wants in, and he’s not prepared to allow her to push him away, and his patience, gentleness, understanding and protectiveness is just gorgeous. “Please don’t shut me out again. Please let me be here for you. For whatever you need.” He pauses. “I’m here, Say.” But Lucas is out, and he is determined to push his way back into Sabra’s life. It’s suspenseful and a devastatingly emotional journey for Sabra as she drowns in her bad memories and the huge threat hanging over her. And I was really feeling for her as she fights to continue on with her life and finally let somebody in despite it all. “I love you … No matter what. I’m sorry I’m used and broken and messed up. But I love you. I always will.” It’s no surprise where the story is going, and the suspense builds really well throughout the book. The big climax is heartpoundingly disturbing ((view spoiler)[and made me want to smack Sabra for her stupidity! (hide spoiler)] ), but it ends well, and though I would have liked to have seen a little bit more closure (I wanted to see Sabra’s dynamic with her parents explored a bit more), I was happy with how the story finished. This is a really good read. I was impressed with Dunbar’s writing – she handles a difficult subject matter respectfully and with heart, getting her message across without relying on graphic shock factor, and concentrating more on the emotional, which I really appreciated. And the romance provides enough lightness and happy to keep things from getting too dark. Emotional and intense, this story is really well done. 3.5 stars. I didn't like that in the opening chapter it seemed like she was playing games with Trevor. It really bothered me that he was such a good guy and supposedly one of her best friends, but then she admits to stringing him along for the last 4 YEARS. I ended up having to push myself through to get past that. Another thing that bothered me was her surprising lack of self-preservation. The situations she put herself in that are dangerous for a woman WITHOUT a stalker, let alone one WITH a stalker were pretty mind boggling. Ex: walking in parking lots at night with her face in her phone, going to semi-isolated places alone with strangers, etc. It just seemed like she didn't have a care in the world at times, while other times she was scared out of her mind (understandably so, of course). It was odd to me and it kind of took away from the overall dangerous vibe of the story. One of the things I did like about her though, was her friendship with Micah and her overall strength. The end of the book was really impactful and truly showcased how far she has come and how much stronger she was now than she was in the beginning. On to Trevor, I liked him a lot. He had the patience of a saint. I honestly don't know how he put up with Sabra in the beginning because she was a mess and wouldn't tell him why. She just kept ghosting him for weeks on end and it drove me crazy as the reader. He was genuinely a great guy and probably my favorite character of the book. His protectiveness and his friendship were beautiful to witness. The suspense aspect of this story as well as the flashbacks were really interesting and gripping. I do wish the flashbacks had a little bit more to them because we don't even know with 100% certainty what was going on with Lucas and Sabra. It's barely even eluded to, so we never get to understand how it started and evolved. I don't need any of the situations in explicit detail, but I think a little more information and a little less guessing would have taken this book to a whole new level. That being said, Kate Dunbar did a really great job of showing us how dangerous Lucas was without the extra detail and that is the sign of a pretty amazing writer, in my opinion. One thing I didn't like, which is ultimately why I knocked a star off, was how once we get to the middle of the book it's just all about Trevor and Sabra's relationship. It felt like a romantic college-aged romance at that part and I felt like the Lucas aspect was lost a bit. However, when it came back, it came back with a vengeance. And even though I wanted to throw my AirPods across the room when Sabra made the incredibly idiotic decision (re: lack of self-preservation) I still couldn't find it in me to stop listening. I've never listened to anything by Stella Hunter, but I can say that I will definitely look up other books she's narrated. She had a great voice and a pretty good male voice. She did a really good job acting out the parts, particularly the parts with Lucas. I do think there were moments where she made the characters sound seductive when they weren't trying to be and that kind of took me out of the moment. Overall, I definitely recommend this book. It was very gripping and very much kept me sitting at the edge of my seat. Whether you listen to or eyeball read this book, you will most likely enjoy it.

Sabra Valentine is a survivor of domestic abuse, victimized by her older brother Lucas since she was a 7 year old child. She suffered the abuse alone, afraid to tell her parents and never shared what happened with anyone else. Having enough she saves herself the only way she knew how and at 17 she was finally free from him and his narcissistic and evil ways. Seven years later she is living her life, she is in grad school and is looking forward to a career in acting. She is seeing a wonderful guy, Trevor Collins, but when she gets a call from Lucas she knows for his own good she needs to push him away. Lucas is back to terrorize her once again. Trevor gives her space but does not give up on her. Lucas torments from a distance, little things are first but it starts to escalate and by the end we see how sick he really is.This book is cleverly plotted withe plenty of drama, angst, twists and turns, thrilling suspense, including psychological suspense, heartfelt and emotional moments and a wonderful romance. I have to say the realism of this story makes it even more meaningful, it cuts deep and may take some out of their comfort zone at times. I admired Sabra for her strength and determination and Trevor for his patience, understanding and for not giving up on her. Kate Dunbar, it was an honor to listen to your debut novel, the story is not an easy one but it definitely one that needs to be told and heard. Thank you for this great story and emotional rollercoaster ride. 🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Stella Hunter is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. You could hear how much heart she puts into her work as she captures the characters emotions and projects them into her performs. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to.
