On rare occasion, a fascinating artist will endeavor to peel back the curtain and truly reveal themselves: their craft, their thoughts, their pain, their humanity. But it is even more rare that the artist actually possesses the range of gifts to pull it off. Well, this isn't an audiobook nor a memoir, it's a recorded interview. The content is ok if you are interested in knowing more about Annie Clark's career and lyrics.

So, I've just never actually enjoyed what I've heard of St. Vincent, but I have a number of friends who LOVE her, so I always think I should just keep trying and someday it will make sense to me. I guess that's why I read this? And I did really enjoy listening to her talk. I found the things she talked about interesting, and really, just...liked the sound of her voice and her inflection and just, her tone. As for the music? Um...there was one song out of like, 8 or 9 that I sort of liked, mainly because she sounds like Tori Amos in it? But other than that she's still a no thanks for me. That said, I would definitely listen to her just talk about more things!

St. Vincent is the stage name of Annie Clark, a talented singer/songwriter who breaks down her life both on and offstage in this heartfelt medley of story and song. Although I am not familiar with that much of her individual music, she used to perform with the Polyphonic Spree, a vibrant musical group that I saw live before. I saw Polyphonic Spree open for David Bowie in Philadelphia in 2003/2004. I enjoyed this raw portrayal of the impact of music in her growth as an artist and the ongoing cycl St. Vincent is the stage name of Annie Clark, a talented singer/songwriter who breaks down her life both on and offstage in this heartfelt medley of story and song. As a big fan of St Vincent, who is often somewhat elusive in interviews, I loved hearing a full hour of her personal stories and stories of her music. Might not win over new fans, but if you like Annie’s music and want to hear more about her inspiration (and you’ve got an audible membership), I highly recommend listening.

Enjoyable, short audiobook. It's basically an interview without the questions, but gives some reasonably good, if brief, insight into her art.

Insightful thoughts on creative and performative processes, and the transitions and spaces between.
