Walt Whitman has a lot going for him. His enthusiastic, inventive free verse. His ambition of theme. His wide influence on future poets and authors. Going against him, his undisciplined prose, his forceful vanity, the inconsistency in quality of his work (ironic that he is best-known for the awful "O Captain, My Captain" which is not at all representative of his general style.) This is the 9th (deathbed) edition of Leaves of Grass, the only major work W.W. produced, which he continually extended, edited and republished throughout his literary career. It is a chore to try to read it straight through, as I did. He really swings for the rafters, and often misses. It feels bloated. I probably would have better enjoyed the 1855 1st edition, which has a reputation (as a much shorter volume) to be a superior distillation of Whitman's best offerings.

Are you the new person drawn toward me? To begin with, take warning, I am surely far different from what you suppose; Do you suppose you will find in me your ideal? Do you think it so easy to have me become your lover? Do you think the friendship of me would be unalloy’d satisfaction? Do you think I am trusty and faithful? Do you see no further than this façade, this smooth and tolerant manner of me? Do you suppose yourself advancing on real ground toward a real heroic man? I love Walt Whitman. Before I read his complete works, I really did not like him at all, but this time, something happened to me. I think I gave him the time he deserves and allowed myself to read deeply. I read his works aloud and that made such a difference. I love how he talks directly to me, the reader. I am empowered when I read certain poems. I am moved when I read about his time as a Civil War volunteer nurse. He has a way of connecting to his readers. Wonderful piece of writing - so happy to have had the experience of taking an entire course on Whitman.
