Macy not only gives her friend a safe place to stay, but she also vows to do her best to find out who wants her dead. Is it a crazed fan? or someone in the band? maybe even her husband? All my favorite characters are back in Fair Trade. I just love Macy and Bo and the way they work together, each with their own strengths. They always have each other’s back. We continue to learn more about Bo’s past as it pops up a little more in each story. I also love Macy’s Great Dane Coal. He is very protective of his person. Makes me long for one of my own but maybe a smaller breed. Waffles also returns in this installment. He is very energetic and mischievous pup and still looking for just the right owner. I really enjoyed the drama-filled mystery. I was all over the place as to who the guilty party was and then the author threw out a corkscrew twist and turned everything upside down. The author really keeps her readers on their toes and totally entertained. Each Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery delivers a wonderful cast of evolving characters, an intriguing mystery, along with animals that will steal your heart. They can each be read on their own but to really get to know the characters you should read the series from the start. Heather Day Gilbert has done it again. In Fair Trade, she has given readers another Perfect Escape. I can’t wait to read Spilled Milk set to release April 19, 2021.

Heather Day Gilbert certainly knows her way around a cozy mystery. I've been all in with this series, loving Bo and Macy Hatfield and their cafe with a dog area. I want to visit! I'd just stay all day with the dogs. And Coal! That dog is so precious and such a wonderful character. I find myself wanting to snuggle up to him on the sofa where he takes up all the room nearly. And they mysteries are good, too. I never guess the culprit, though. I am such a poor detective. I am looking forward to the Heather Day Gilbert certainly knows her way around a cozy mystery. I loved the setting of the fair for this installment in the Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery series! With this particular story, I totally did not see the ending coming. I had a few guesses as to who the villain might be, but I was completely wrong. I love that these books are fun, clean, and engaging, and I always enjoy them with my young teenaged daughter. (She always reads them faster than I do!)

Macy and Bo are siblings that get along very well. They have a business together--Barks and Beans Cafe. People can enjoy some coffee while playing with shelter dogs. Macy is excited to see her old friend, Carolina, who is now a big country singing star. But it seems as though things are not going well for the country star when two attempts are made on her life. Macy, along with the help of her brother and some friends, have to figure out who is behind all the trouble before Carolina is permanently silenced. The relationship between Macy and Bo is heartwarming and endearing. And Coal, Macy’s Great Dane, is as lovable as ever and wants to get in on the investigation. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and brought the book to life in my mind. Whether I was reading about the state fair or Waffles, the crazy shelter dog, I was into it one hundred percent. The mystery was well plotted and the ending was a bit of a shock, which I love. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This whole series is very good and I cannot wait to read the next one. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.

Another fantastic addition to my favourite cozy series. This time, the Hatfield siblings are in for a surprise. Iced Over is another quick and fun installment to the Barks & Beans Cafe series! I adore Macy and Bo and love the small-town feel of these books. I loved the cameo of Tess Spencer – that was a fun Easter egg for this reader, since I adore Tess like she’s my personal bestie. The rambunctious shelter dog, Waffles, is back in this story as well, causing chaos wherever she goes. I appreciate the continuity that appears throughout these stories – relationships grow and develop over time, and Gilbert can take her time to do so because they can be spread out versus jam packed into one book. There are several relationships that I’m eager to see how they play out, especially one that means possible dealings with a villain. I wouldn’t argue against a bit more Titan McCoy either! Alas, I guess I'll have to wait until book four to find out what our protagonists get into next! I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author. This review is my honest opinion.

Another draw to this year's fair is Carolina Crush, a hot new country band, whose star grew up in Lewisburg. Reconnecting with her childhood friend, Carolina invites Macy to a private buffet with the band. What's served up is primarily tension and Macy leaves with a bad taste in her mouth. When Carolina becomes sick afterward, yet no one else suffers any ill effects, Macy suspects someone tried to poison her old friend. Who would want the rising star dead? The back up singer? The husband? Or maybe her stalker. When I think of state fairs I think of fair food, midway rides, and prize winning animals. There's also a somewhat seedy side to fairs, whether it's the transient nature of it, the hucksters, or the glittery nature of everything that seems to quickly fade away. That aura of something unsettling, something not quite right permeates FAIR TRADE. Carolina Crush may be successful, but the undercurrents show that all is not golden. I enjoy the characters and seeing their developing relationships grow in this third Barks and Beans Cafe mystery. I especially like the addition of Macy's new neighbor, Vera. I was also thrilled to see Waffles make an appearance and am confident someday she will find someone who will appreciate her. I love the fact that the third Barks and Beans Mystery continues to build on a longer story arc with nefarious characters popping up when least expected participating in an ongoing mystery that's slowly being revealed. FAIR TRADE is a mystery of subtleties. It's quiet, more strategic mystery that looks at trust, memories, and friendships. FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me an e-copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

This time, Macy reconnects with an old school friend, now a country music star, who’s in town for a couple of concerts at the fair. Macy enjoys the chance to see behind the scenes in the band, but when there’s an attempt on her friend’s life the rest of the band suddenly look like suspects. The fairground atmosphere took me back to fun childhood memories of rides, food, and exhibits. Favourite line: It was a curious concoction of popcorn, hot dogs, and caramel, mingled with the very human scent of something I could only describe as undiluted excitement. [Kindle location 719, Macy describing the scent of the fair] I found the psychology especially interesting in this story, and of course Coal the Great Dane is a treat. I like how he’s always featured on the covers. Waffles the clueless shelter dog is back, as well of course as the likeable siblings and their staff and friends. And there's a surprise cameo appearance by someone fans will recognize from another Heather Day Gilbert series! Another thing I appreciate about this series is the overarching plot threads that link the books. Not that a reader couldn’t start here and be happy, but continuity-wise it’s better to start at the beginning and watch it all unfold. Each story is complete on its own, but as well as developing relationships there’s the shadowy background villain who keeps inserting himself into Macy’s life. Fair Trade is a quick, clean cozy mystery that may have you wishing for a chance to take in your own local fair. Award-winning author Heather Day Gilbert writes cozy mysteries, suspense and romantic suspense, and Viking historicals. For more about the author and her books, visit heatherdaygilbert.com. Can Macy figure out who is trying to kill Carolina? Macy Hatfield Macy Hatfield is our main and point of view character. She is an interesting main character, and I have to say that I like her a lot. I felt bad for her about her whole back story and what was happening in this story. Wow, it is quite a doozy. Macy is a great main character and sleuth. She was good at getting most of the clues correct but was putting them to the wrong person, which we occasionally do. Macy knows her flaws, and despite them, she has always tried to do better than before. I think that we would be friends, especially since I wouldn't mind spending time in the barks section. The Mystery Macy helps out an old childhood friend, Carolina, by figuring out why someone is trying to kill her. Well, it's just one doozy of a thing after another on this one. Many potential suspects, but trying to figure out their motive, is really hard when they don't really want to talk to Macy. So, Macy has her work cut out to solve this mystery. Especially since someone maybe getting hurt, that isn't Carolina? What is happening at this fair? Five Stars Fair Trade by Heather Day Gilbert is a great book by this author who is really talented. My heart raced when Macy ran into her old friend-turned-country-music-star, and my heart pounded when Carolina was struck with [SPOILER!] The more Macy discovers about the attacks on her friend, the more confusing it becomes. But for all her quirky qualities, Macy has staying power and she is determined to help her friend. Macy could well be a detective but for her whimsical and offbeat methods, which aren’t really methods at all. But she is as clever and diligent as, well, a hound, and her mind is always clicking, piecing together the bits like jigsaw puzzle pieces in a scavenger hunt. Bo, strong and silent and stoic, is on perpetual stand-by to rescue his sister from the freak situations she has a habit of stumbling into. Their bond is deep, borne of tragedy and secured by love. And Coal! Well, who wouldn’t love a dog as big as horse! He may be big but he’s a gentle giant, and oh! so protective of Macy. Ms. Gilbert’s writing is brilliant, her characters real and fun, her stories a delight to read, and I look forward to the next book in this series, Spilled Milk. Siblings Macy and Bo see the state fair as their chance to “step right up” and boost their one-year-old coffee shop and dog cafe business by setting up a booth in the middle of the festivities. But before they can even take a whirl on the Ferris wheel, life spins out of control when Macy’s old friend, now a famous country singer, arrives to make music but nearly gets murdered instead. After a homicide, a celebrity scandal, and a few too many carnival snacks, the state fair isn’t so great anymore, and Macy and Bo will have to solve the crime before their first year in business becomes their last. Fair Trade is as tight and eventful as a whodunnit can be while not sacrificing character development. The reader follows the clues right alongside Macy, and just when the answer seems near, a new twist crashes in like an over enthusiastic bumper car. Closing the book before discovering where all the clues finally lead is next to impossible. Fair Trade can be read as a stand-alone, but it is even more entertaining to continue the journey with the Barks & Beans characters after getting to know them in No Filter and Iced Over. Macy and Bo are winsome and fun, as is their community of baristas and friends—both human and furry. If you’re the kind of reader who is drawn to great cozy mysteries like a fair-goer is drawn to the smell of fresh funnel cakes, then you will find Fair Trade irresistible. The ever lovable great dale Coal is ever present in this story just like the last as well as few other fluffy additions. I am loving this series and can't wait to read more from the Barks & Bean Cafe. 4 stars

I really loved the idea of a dog cafe when I first found this series, and now it's become one of my fave series. Macy's Great Dane Coal is such a sweetheart but a good guard dog too. The main setting for this was the West Virginia state fair in August where Barks & Beans was set up as a vendor. Macy felt especially invested in this mystery due to the victim of two near-death experiences being her old friend turned country lead singer, Carolina. When a murder occurred, was Carolina the intended victim...or was someone targeting the whole band? A lot of things weren't as they seemed as I've come to find out and enjoy about this series. Secrets were kept, and there was a really good twist at the end, and what's come to be sort of a signature surprise but as usual I hadn't seen it coming lol. There's never exactly a cliffhanger but a really interesting ongoing story. I'm anxious for the next book when it comes to KU!

With my packed schedule as a book blogger and reviewer, it’s not often that I get to read one for the pure enjoyment of reading. However, since reading book one in Heather Day Gilbert’s Barks & Beans series, I’ve made a point to get to the other books in the series somewhat near their release date. This one kept me guessing until the end and the culprit came as a surprise to me, which made the book even that much better, in my opinion. I look forward to spending more time with Macy, Coal, and the group at the café this spring when the next installment arrives. But please, can we get more of Titan McCoy in that book? Pretty please? 😊 Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

A superb read and a great catch up with Macy, Bo, and of course the big dog - Cole. Fingers from the past keep reaching into Bo and Macy current lives, including some new revelations about Auntie A. I eagerly await the next installment.

The twists in the plot of this book were not unlike those you will find on the midway of your local fair! Since we couldn't enjoy the fair this year due to COVID, this book was an extra special treat, bringing back memories of the fun experienced in years past. Once again, Macy and Bo Hatfield give unselfishly of themselves to see that truth and justice prevail in their hometown of Lewisburg, WV. Fabulous! I love reading books by Heather Day Gilbert. These murder mysteries will keep the reader on their toes. The characters are fantastic including Coal, Macy’s big dog. I have enjoyed every book in this series. I love the Bark and Beans concept of Coffee Shop/Meet Rescue Dogs. All of the characters are just charming. In this one there is a mystery who is stalking a famous singer home for a concert. Things get more intense when one of the band members is found dead on the fair grounds. Heather Day Gilbert gives the reader a Cozy Mystery and great characters.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for. Just when I think this series can't get any better we get a new one that proves me wrong. As an added bonus Macy's childhood BFF will be there with her famous country band to perform. Not expecting any favors Macy tries to hook up with her to relive old times only to find herself with fantastic seats at the next concert as well as other benefits. She's excited until accidents start happening making it look like her friend is being targeted. Then the backup singer is found murdered so she invites her to stay at her house so she will be safe. Its one thing after another until the secrets start coming out with a surprising twist that makes the ending blow your mind. Not only is it a great mystery but the dogs featured throughout make it even sweeter. Of course you cannot forget Macy's Great Fans Coal who also has her back as well as her brother Bo who is fantastic at keeping her safe. This all combines into one fantastic cozy mystery that animal fans are sure to love. I personally am looking forward to the next installment. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
