She leaves New York and returns home to Holly Grove Island, her small hometown in the Outer Banks, to hide out among family and friends and figure out her next move. Dakota doesn’t tell anyone the real reason she lost her job, unwilling to face the shame of her downfall. She had no idea that Dexter Roberts had also returned to the island, her first love who broke her heart in high school. It’s clear she still has strong feelings for him, and he for her, but can’t forgive him for their breakup. Dexter is now an executive with a hotel resort and he’s never gotten over Dakota, even though he was the one who abruptly ended their relationship when he went off to college. He’s trying hard to at least develop a friendship but she’s not having it. Both are keeping secrets as they struggle to create a new “friendship” given that it’s a small island and they’re seeing each other daily, especially after Dakota accepts a job that guarantees that. I liked both of them as she’s smart, talented and devoted to her father who loves her unconditionally. He’s committed to his family, too, which is one of the reasons he returned to the island. And, Dexter is a really good man whose great at what he does and is full of regrets about Dakota. First books in a new series have the responsibility of creating and developing not only the characters who will be part of it going forward but the community and setting that is an integral part of the stories. I loved the island community with its long history and stalwart residents who are passionate about maintaining its character. Dakota and Dexter have lots of friends and family that are strong secondary relationships that helped make this a lovely story. I liked the world created here in addition to the second chance romance between these two. Dakota’s unwillingness to be honest about her return bugged me but that was part of her identity that she had to confront and resolve. Dexter was a dream, despite his past and I just knew there was more to that. I really enjoyed the story, especially the romance past and present, and am looking forward to returning to this diverse and close knit town. There in Holly Grove, she has to face her biggest heartbreak, Dexter Roberts. Dexter has always regretted the breakup with Dakota. And now that Dakota is back, perhaps it’s time for a second chance. Second Chance on Cypress Lane is a wonderfully crafted contemporary romance novel. The cast of characters play well into the story and its splendid North Carolina backdrop. You’ll fall in love with Dexter (Dex) and develop a warm and personal attachment to some of the minor players in the story. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel with the exception that I felt it was too drawn-out as far as the Dexter-Dakota relationship goes. Nevertheless, Second Chance on Cypress Lane is still a great read and perfect for contemporary romance aficionados. Four stars. I really liked it. I received a paperback copy of the book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing.) The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

One of the things I loved most about this book was how endearing the characters were. I connected with them easily and saw the pure love that they had for one another. While I think the hero expressed his emotions a little better then dear, Dakota, I still knew that deep down she felt the same. Reading this one was a wonderful experience and as I mentioned before, I look forward to reading many more books from the author. I recommend this one to all romance readers who like their books a little sweeter and extremely charming!

You might as well buy me a ticket there because I’ve already packed my suitcases (in my head) and started planning how soon I can move to this imaginary place. All of this to say, Reese Ryan has created a cozy little town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and I can’t wait to read more about this town and its characters. When small town girl made good returns to town with her tail tucked between her legs, no one in town bats an eye. Dakota’s father and her best friend, Sinclair, are overjoyed at her return, and so is her high school boyfriend, Dexter. Of course Dakota still has the hots for him, though she won’t admit it to anyone, not even herself, and he has the hots for her, but they both try to play it cool. In the hands of a less experienced author, this storyline could have been predictable and just a little cheesy. Reese Ryan, however, doesn’t make the focal point of the story about will they or won’t they. Our girl Dakota gets to focus on family issues, friendship issues, employment issues. What I’m saying is she’s a grown woman whose life doesn’t revolve around whether or not she’s going to hook up with a man. But if she does? When she does? Steamy! 😅😅😅 Can you tell how much I enjoyed Second Chance? I started reading it on my lunch hour and skipped TV watching so I could finish it the same day. Thanks to @readforeverpub for sending this one my way. I saw so many potential couple matchups while reading it and I’m so looking forward to returning to Holly Grove Island in 2021.

This book was just the right combo of sweet and funny with a little bit of steam mixed in. I love the characters and the little community, which I’m excited to get back to when the second book comes out. But, her dad's health issues means her stay will be longer than she originally intended. Staying in her hometown longer means running into her high school boyfriend, Dexter. He dumped her after his first semester in college claiming he needed to see other people. She hasn't gotten over that as she was ready to go to his college (instead of her beloved NYU) and change he life's goals. The longer she stays, the closer she gets to Dexter and soon she needs to figure out what her career and her life aspirations are. I love second chance romances and this one was excellent. I love that the characters all have a history together. The secondary characters were all well written and fun. There is some light steam in the second half of the book, but nothing too heavy. I have never read this author before, but I hope to return to Holly Grove Island and read Sinclair's story.

I loved the pull between them as they reconnect, there was a nice slow burn happening. There was a really great cast of characters introduced and I see the foundation for future stories that have been set up. I not only liked the healing taking place between Dakota and Dexter but also with her best friend Sinclair, they have a really great bond. There's were also some really nice moments with Dakota’s dad that choked me up. The storytelling was really well done with an excellent build. I liked the third person, dual POV and thought it flowed well and had really good details. There were some fun, playful scenes as well that brought in some really entertaining moments. I thought Second Chance on Cypress Lane was a great introduction to a new series. A sweet and fun story full of healing that will fill your heart and leave you smiling. Our heroine doesn't want to tell her father the real reason she lost her job and she wants even less to cross path with her high school sweetheart. But circumstances conspired so she ended up working for the man who broked her heart when he dumped her after his first semester in college. Maybe it's time that Dexter Roberts, the guy who might have a career as a professional football player if not for a knee injury, tell her the real reason why he broke up with her back in the days. And while trying to deal with his two jobs as assitant and director of resorts in Holly Grove Island, Dexter plan on asking for a second chance, or at least, get back to being her friend again. But is there really a choice when there's still lingering attraction and feelings between them? It was easy to see that despite the time and the distance, Dakota and Dexter still cared about each other and that's why their chemistry felt so real and their second chance romance was so satisfying. I also enjoyed the friendship between Dakota and Sinclair, how they also rekindled the relationship even if they lost touch after school and I'm so happy to know her friend is getting her HEA next😃.

But now that he's temporarily her boss and relegated to the friend zone, convincing Dakota to give him a second chance won't be easy. This was a sweet second chance story, but the incredibly slow burn here did make it difficult for me to stay interested in the story. There was so much enumeration from both main characters of all the reasons they couldn't be together that it just became repetitive for me. Dakota's rather callous and nonsensible reasoning made her a bit unlikeable for me as well. Dex was a charming hero, but it took too long for these two to have a real, mature conversation and it just baffled me that Dakota would still be so bitter and hateful about it after so long. Reading high school-esque drama with people in their mid-thirties was a bit odd for me and I wanted more maturity from the main characters. Overall, I enjoyed the small town feel and the North Carolina charm in this one, I just got a bit bogged down in the slow pace, although the characters were sweet together. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Everything would need must be exposed before moving forward. It's unfortunate for both Dakota and Dexter that parent interference shaped the lives. Second Chance on Cypress Lane is the first novel I’ve read by Ryan but it won’t be my last. It’s an entertaining, enjoyable, satisfying treat and I can’t wait to read what happens in this small North Carolina community next. Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan is amazing! This story follows a young woman who lost her career and love interest all in one swoop. It also features her journey back home and a rekindle of past romance with her best friend. Hope, second chances, new beginnings, and family are the wonderful themes readers can find in this book. I was in love the moment I met all the characters. Family and friends of the protagonists made this novel a more heartfelt and emotionally charged tale. Overall, I am impressed by Reese Ryan's talent and characterization. Her storytelling skills are impeccable. Second Chance on Cypress Lane was the first of her books that I have read. I cannot wait to read more by this writer. I received this copy from the publisher. After a scandal ruins her job opportunities in New York, Dakota heads home to North Carolina to reevaluate things and spend time with her father. The one person she hopes not to see when she is home is her ex-boyfriend Dexter who broke her heart 17 years ago. But of course Dakota can’t avoid him and Dexter is hoping for a second chance or at least for Dakota to forgive him for the break-up that broke his heart as well. Dexter quickly became one of my favorite male characters in a book. Once you find out why he originally broke up with Dakota, you can’t help but fall in love with him. He was so sweet and he was willing to risk his own happiness to ensure Dakota got everything she wanted. I loved that this book offered both Dakota and Dexter’s perspective on things, I feel it just adds so much more to the story when you know what both characters are thinking. The ending to me was perfect and I hope we’ll be catching up with Dakota and Dexter in Ryan’s next book in this series in 2021! This is a thoroughly enjoyable second-chance romance with an insane amount of pining. Though it’s releasing during the usual holiday novel season, it’s actually more of a beach read, as it starts with the town’s Fourth of July festival. Dakota is returning home to lick her wounds after getting fired from her job as an investigative journalist in NYC due to a scandal. Holly Grove Island doesn’t seem to have changed much from the small town she left seventeen years ago – though her ex-boyfriend is even hotter. Dex dumped her out of the blue when he returned home from college for winter break during her senior year of high school, and she’s never forgiven him for that, though she’s determined not to show how much it still hurts. That’s more of a challenge than she expected as she seems to keep running into him, and it gets even worse when she gets a job in marketing with the island’s new hotel… just as Dex is promoted to interim manager. But no matter how much chemistry they have, Dakota’s leaving again as soon as she can find a new job. Getting involved with him again would surely be a bad idea, right? “If it weren’t for the small matter of hating Dexter Roberts’s guts, she’d be inclined to put him on a plate, sop him up with a warm biscuit, then wash him down with an ice-cold glass of sweet tea.” I absolutely loved Dakota. When she returns home, she’s hurting from betrayal of her trust, but she’s desperate to hide that anything’s wrong from her family and friends. But at the same time that she’s talking about how wonderful NYC is and how hard she’s looking for a new journalism job, she’s also remembering how much she loves the small town she grew up in, and how much she misses her dad and her best friend. Dex was a sweetheart from the beginning. He broke up with her because he didn’t want her to give up her dreams of journalism school at NYU to follow him to his college, but he never stopped loving her. He’s sure that this is his opportunity to reconnect with her. Dakota and Dex have amazing chemistry, and while it’s also obvious the rear that Dakota still has feelings for him, she ignores them. After all, he already broke her heart once, and she’s set on finding another job and leaving again. But the more she sees of him, the more she remembers why she loved him (hello, jazz band scene), and oh, the pining is just perfect. From the moment they saw each other again, it was obvious they were meant to be together, and I loved watching then alternately attempt to fight it and lean in to it. There’s a lot to unpack as well in terms of parental pressure and expectations for both Dex and Dakota. Both felt the need to live up their parents’ ideas of what their lives should be like, and that’s what forced them apart, and naturally, just as they’re getting back together, more bombshells threaten their relationship again. Dakota spends a lot of time wrestling with this in the book, especially as the parent involved was her mother who had since passed away from cancer. The way Dakota handled her outrage and grief and finally found a resolution was especially touching to me. The side characters were amazing, especially Dakota’s best friend, Sin. I loved how even though Dakota dropped the ball on their relationship, when she asked her for help, Sin was there for her. Her matchmaking antics were pretty hilarious, too. And truly, this book had some absolutely hilarious zingers. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the next Holly Grove Island book! I received an advance review copy of this book from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Once upon a time, Dakota and Dex were a young couple in love with a future ahead of them right up until Dex left for college and broke Dakota’s heart with a break-up instead of a forever. There were reasons (there always are), but ones that Dex couldn’t explain, and so they parted, still in love, to their separate futures. Now, years later, Dakota has returned home after being fired and shamed after a romance blows up in her face, a very public, very married already scandal that stole not only the job promotion she expected but her confidence as well. She’s not about to tell anyone the real reasons that she returned home – but she needs a restart and where better to figure out what to do next than with the man who loves her unconditionally – her father. She just didn’t expect to run into Dex again – or for those feelings that never really died to flare up even hotter than she remembered. Dex has a career he loves, one he excels at, and life should be good but something is missing. And when Dakota returns to their small hometown Dex is well aware of what that “something missing” is… the woman he never stopped loving, even if their break-up was for her own good. (note to guys: stop making our decisions for our own good!) I had such a good time with Second Chance on Cypress Lane for several reasons. Dakota might be down on her luck right now but she’s no pushover, she doesn’t need a man to make it all better, baby – this girl can and will rebuild on her own terms. And that aspect of her personality I adored. She knows when to be strong and she also knows when to soften, and she’s learning how to regain the trust in the man she never stopped loving. I adored Dex, yes, he had reasons but they hurt him just as much as they did Dakota. He’s a strong man without being overpowering, he knows how to wait, to play the long game when the goal is the woman he loves back in his life. I love a quirky, gossipy, in your face small-town community – and that fits Holly Grove Island to a tee. I want to know more about some secondary characters, hoping that they get books along the way – others I realize will probably always be the background characters that make a town functional and growing but I’m looking forward to hearing more banter from them as well. In all, Second Chance on Cypress Lane hit all the boxes just right for me. Now comes the wait until I can return with the next story in this series. *I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Forever via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

It wasn't what she had planned but after her career exploded in her face due to a controversy with a married ex-boyfriend the only place she can seek solace is Holly Grove Island, NC. Dexter "Dex" Roberts was the love of her life and broke her heart on Christmas Day seventeen years ago. The last person she expected seeing at a festival upon her return was Dex. He was suppose to become a NFL player but an injury in college sidelined that dream and now he works for a resort in Holly Grove. When Dex sees Dakota again he sees it as a second chance at love with her. Although he broke up with her seventeen years ago, he has regretted that decision ever since. Dakota was the one that got away and the love of his life. There is more to the story than Dakota knows for their breakup. With a job available at the resort Dex works at, he's hoping Dakota will take it to not only help reform a friendship between them but if Dex can have a say a new relationship. This is the first book in an upcoming series. Although this book was a little longer than I felt was needed, I do think it longer to allow for setting up the future characters within the series. This is an open door romance but if it isn't for you those romantic aspects don't happen until the last fourth of the book and there are only a few scenes. Reese Ryan's words transported me to Holly Grove and I look forward to where she'll go with the rest of the series. It is also worth noting Reese Ryan is an own voices romance writer. Although this is her first in this series, she has written many other books and I'll have to delve into her backlist.

Dexter must decide if his feelings for Dakota are worth risking a career, he spent so much time building. This was a sweet story of second chances and rekindling a broken friendship. As a reader we get insight into how each character is feeling as the story is told from both points of view. I did feel however that a lot of time was spent with them reminiscing on the past and retelling their earlier romance. I would have liked to have the story focus more on the present and their time spent learning how to trust one another. All in all it was a good story and I do look forward to the next book in the series. When she finds herself at the center of a scandal that upends her entire life, she has no choice but to return home to the small town of Holly Grove. Going back home brings up a lot of mixed emotions for her for many reasons, one of those reasons being Dexter. Dakota and Dexter were high school sweethearts, but Dexter broke her heart when he broke up with her, and Dakota was completely blindsided by it. Now that she's back in town, they have some unfinished business to tend to. I love second chance romances, so I really enjoyed this one. I thought this was a heartwarming story that was funny and charming, with the perfect amount of steam. The characters in their town from their families to their friends were genuine and the perfect complements to the main characters. I was also excited to see that two of those characters will be getting their own story, which will be out next year. The chemistry between Dakota and Dex was tangible and undeniable, and I enjoyed watching the two of them find their way back to each other. Dakota and Dex had both been through a lot over their years apart, so it was sweet to see them come back together after all that time to help heal each other.
