I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. This book explores the true value of money over a lifetime, from a child with a few pennies for the candy store to a life changing route out of poverty. The piece that really got to me was Phyllis: The Hoarder's Daughter. How often do we look at someone and pass judgement without even knowing them? In the end, we usually end up with our foot up our butts because what you see isn't always what you get. I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway. This book is the outcome of an art project: a series of interviews with women which was turned into a play. As an art project, it works well. It is a small (4.5" x 6") 128-page book printed on heavy stock. It consists of short snippets from the interviews organized in 8 brief chapters. It reminded me of those themed gift books filled with aphorisms and famous quotes used for inspiration. It reminded me of those themed gift books filled with aphorisms and famous quotes used for inspiration. The author suggests that readers use the questions she used in her interviews to spark discussions among their friends and relatives--a useful and needed discussion. Unfortunately, that is not the book I expected. I thought I was getting a book based on a social science project: the study of how women thought about, reacted to, handled, and were impacted by money. I expected context, analysis, and suggested policy solutions to poverty and economic literacy. I was profoundly disappointed because women and money (in this social context) is a topic close to my heart. Because I was so disappointed, I didn't rate this book. It should be rated on what it is, not what I wanted. I hope reading this review will help people decide if this is the book for them. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.

I received an Advance Readers Copy of Legal Tender: Women & the Secret Life of Money through Goodreads' Giveaways. Legal Tender is compelling book that traces the various relationships different women have to money through a series of stories. These stories were collected by the author, Christian McEwan, using a variety of questions that she outlines at the end of the book. Enjoyed this book and was able to see myself in parts or all of the various women's stories. Enjoyed this book and was able to see myself in parts or all of the various women's stories.

I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this from Bauhan Publishing. I warmed up to this short work as I read it. It is composed of short vignettes revolving around the subject of money in various women's lives, gleaned from interviews with them. At the end of some of these are quotations on the subject of money by well-known people, e.g., "The greatest gift every girl can have is economic independence." -- Helen Mirren The quotations were a plus. The most interesting story to me was one told by a woman whose husband based the amount of household work he would do on the percentage of household income he was providing. The greater the percentage attributed to him, the less household work he would do, regardless of hours worked outside the home.

This book is a very short and small book, but despite it being very short I still had a really hard time finishing it. Unfortunately, I think because the stories were so short, I had a really hard time feeling connected to the women and their stories. I do applaud McEwen for bringing up money and trying to get rid of the taboo with talking about money! I could see this working well as a show where the real women were telling these stories in real life.
