Reviewed as part of the May BOOM Pubwatch on Women Write About Comics Peridot and Lapis, like many others in Beach City, are huge fans of the TV show Camp Pining Hearts. And while looking for more ways to immerse themselves in that world, they stumble across Lars’ secret fanfiction and fall in love. Wanting to share this perfect fanfic with others, they decide to put on a play with the help of Steven, Connie, and the other Crystal Gems. Since I’m a little behind on the show and comics, I’m not as familiar with Peridot and Lapis, so I liked having a whole graphic novel to get to know them a little bit better. There were probably a few moments that would have been more meaningful if I already had that background but it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. I also really like the central role fanfiction took in this story, and that it wasn’t treated as a joke or something to be ashamed of. Peridot and Lapis are open about their enjoyment of Camp Pining Hearts fanfiction and no one makes fun of them when they share their plans to put on a play. It was a refreshing change from the way fanfiction is often presented in media.

A delightful treat for Steven Universe fans, Camp Pining Play shows Peridot and Lapis Lazuli, with help from various Beach City residents, performing a play based on their favorite television show. I'm not exactly sure where this fits in the show's continuity (presumably sometime in Season 4?) but it's delightfully written and silly, without sacrificing the characters and lessons about acceptance that make the show pleasant. I'm not exactly sure where this fits in the show's continuity (presumably sometime in Season 4?) but it's delightfully written and silly, without sacrificing the characters and lessons about acceptance that make the show pleasant. Peridot and Lapis are side characters on the show so it's nice to see them receiving focus; Peridot's gently domineering enthusiasm for the project and Lapis's reticence about performing are well-rendered and very much in character. There are some light jabs towards the Steven Universe fandom that are probably appreciated by that audience (then again, I wonder who but SU fans would read this); nonetheless, it's nice that the comic passes no judgment on the idea of fandom, something other media reflexively ridicules. There's also a nice, kid-friendly message about personal boundaries and being considerate of friends' emotions and needs amidst the humor. Besides which, fans who ship Lapis and Peridot will absolutely *love* this comic.

Peridot and Lapis mount a play based on their favourite fan-fiction story about "Camp Pining Hearts" and it's super adorable. All the characters voices ring true to the TV show and the messages about inclusivity and how to get along with other members of a fandom are heartfelt and positive. This story exemplifies the values of the world of Steven Universe and was a fun read to boot. This is a delightful read from the Steven Universe world! From Lars not wanting to claim credit for a popular fan fiction to the gems having an important conversation about consent, this story is full of important values but also takes on popular culture. Full of the same heart the show is, this is a great read.
