The Spanish Civil War is sometimes seen as merely a precursor to World War II, and it’s easy to understand why. The troops of the extreme right fought against those of the extreme left, and the soldiers and military hardware of Germany, Italy, and Russia faced off on Spanish battlefields many years before they fought each other on the Russian steppes. For the first time, the world would see bombings of civilians to create terror. There were secret police forces on both sides and large numbers of arbitrary executions, and the use of imprisonment without trial and torture as a means of establishing state power became almost routine. But the Spanish Civil War was much more than just an overture to World War II. It was a war born out of schisms in Spanish society between rich and poor, monarchists and Republicans, the right and the left, and between those who supported the church and those who saw it as an instrument of oppression. For all its brutality and horror, the Spanish Civil War was a conflict between ideals often fought by volunteers on each side who truly believed that they were helping to build a better world. Inside you will read about... ✓ Taking Positions ✓ Outside Intervention ✓ The Terror ✓ Nationalists Triumphant in the North ✓ The Republicans Fight Back ✓ The End of the War And much more! This book provides an overview of the causes which led to the war, the significance of outside intervention, and the main events which took place between July 1936 and April 1939. This is not an exhaustive history of the war, but it’s rather a succinct introduction for anyone interested in an overview of this confusing but important European war.

A concise and fascinating review of the Spanish Civil War. Although I knew that the book was meant to give us only a general idea of the Spanish Civil War, I still expected more emphasis on the military aspect of the war (i.e. battle tactics of both sides, campaigns etc). Despite this small weakness, it remains a very good introduction of the subject.

One of the wars which shaped the 20th century, explained concisely, as might be expected from this valuable series. We learn, largely via key battles, the tale of how a united and well-organised Nationalist force - supported by the aristocracy, the Church etc., and led by the ruthless Franco - took on a disparate Republican army, supported by Stalin, but weakened by in-fighting. The story-telling is balanced - outlining atrocities on both sides - and the war's impact on subsequent global events i One of the wars which shaped the 20th century, explained concisely, as might be expected from this valuable series. The story-telling is balanced - outlining atrocities on both sides - and the war's impact on subsequent global events is outlined with great clarity. Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the story is the extent to which the Spanish have apparently chosen to bury this painful episode. There are valuable lessons to be learned here.

Another pleasing product from One-Hour History. It does a good job of explaining in a short space the major events and different perspectives on a very important conflict that shaped not only the Second World war but much of the Cold War that followed. Obviously in a few pages you're not going to get a master's degree in Spanish history but in an hour you will definitely fill in a substantial gap in your knowledge. Very readable account of a complicated civil war Having read George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia and a few novels about the Spanish Civil War, I wanted a short, readable history of the country. Short histories can be either overly simplistic or overly detailed, making them less than helpful. Fortunately I found a winner in my first search for the Spanish Civil War, this surprisingly readable and informative book from Hourly Histories.

Short, succinct and crisp. The book not only provides fact relating to this American-Spanish war but also delves into the consequences of this war on the US and Spain. US came out of splendid isolation to chart its own path towards an imperialistic power, going on to play a dominant role during the 20th century. Spain lost most of its empire but improved economically. There were implications for Cuba and Philippines as well.

Wow! Very Educational! I chose this book because we are going to visit Spain, and I had no knowledge about their civil war. It is unbelievable that about half a million people died, and less than half of those were fighting the war! So tragic, and understandable that Spaniards do not even want to speak of it. Hitler ruled Germany for 11 years, and Mussolini ruled Italy for 20, yet Franco ruled Spain for almost 40 years...until his death!

It was good but... I was absolutely stunned by the title. I didn't know this had happened!! So to not only just find out about it but to learn it in general terms was quite cool. I would have given it a full 5 stars however there was such a glaring error towards the end that I just can't. One paragraph starts "On November 31, 1937..." November 31st? Really? It kinda was a buzz kill for me. Otherwise it was really good. It was good but... I was absolutely stunned by the title. I didn't know this had happened!! Good Introduction To the Spanish Civil War I haven't read much about the Spanish Civil War, so this short book provides me with the basic issues surrounding both sides and comparison of the Nationalists and the Republicans. To someone interested in history, these Hourly History books are well worth your time. Definitely found it interesting I knew a little about the Spanish Civil War from the previous history of WWII. There was much going on in Europe at that time and it was kind of a precursor to it.

An Enlightening Read I thought I knew about the Spanish Civil War. This book proved how wrong I was! There were many more factors than I had realised. This book gives a concise history of the events of the most frightening war of all time.

Does an excellent job of “ just the facts, mam”. I enjoyed it. It gave me an excellent summary of a complex war, its issues and the players......not taught in American education.
