Reread September 2018 So, I actually picked up book 3 to read but quickly realized I remembered none of the characters or what had previously happened. I decided to go back and reread this to jog my memory. I actually liked it just a wee bit better this time. Probably my mood and my need for insta-love right now. This is certainly way OTT. It's definitely rushed in several places and still needs fleshing out more. There's also a bad guy...think mustache twirling cartoon villain. Totally insta-love...they are saying ILY's in about 5 days. All of it just seemed very rushed. I think it had the potential to be better. I'll probably read the next one. One of the guys doesn't speak...I'm interested....

And that folks, is how I spent my Saturday. I'm telling the truth. I really don't. This shit was so over the top insane. Honestly. I still don't know what else to say. Yes, I have. This book is so out there that I can't even tell you to just suspend belief, you need to like, just throw all your sanity out the window, hold on tight and just enjoy the ride. The author mentions Alexa Land in her notes. I get that. I can see the influence. Just add one million more times the crazy and yeah, I can see it.

If you like fast paced romances with insta-love, humor, mystery and suspense Succumbing to His Fear may tick off all your boxes. I enjoyed the story as a whole, it was a definite page turner, and very entertaining. I really liked Alfie and Fear, the kids were cute, Alfie's mum Sheridan was a freaking hoot, Alfie's stepfather Ben was awesome, and Fear's entourage of friends and his sister were a joy to read. The romance itself is whiplash fast - I'm talking from meeting to I love you within a week. The romance itself is whiplash fast - I'm talking from meeting to I love you within a week. That is super quick. They've only been together I think four times before they're declaring themselves and vowing forever, and I felt like it was maybe a smidgen too fast? However, I'm a terrible romantic at heart so I usually overlook insta-love. It's sweetly done in the story so it didn't bother me so much as throw me off a little. I really have only two complaints, first the story holds one of my biggest pet peeves - the consistent use of "girl" things as an insult. Examples: "I hate that I sound like a fucking girl." "I was starting to sound like a needy teenage girl." "Okay, so yes, I was sounding like a whiney little girl" I'll admit when I read things like that it drives me nuts. Though, honestly, it probably won't bother the majority of readers. Second, I feel like there were major scenes that happen off page. I would have really liked a better bird's eye view of certain situations (their night together, the meeting with the cop and identifying the body, the interrogations, etc.), especially as this is written in the first person POV of both Alfie and Fear. I wanted more depth with those dire or romantic situations. Though the editing and proofreading could use a little more polishing, on the whole it's a really entertaining story that I liked a lot. It's a fun read. I am also really excited that I got an excerpt at the end for "Sharpening His Broken Talon", which looks like the next installment in this new series! I can't wait to read it! The same dad who built a whole new family which Alfie knew nothing about. His two siblings are now waiting for him to take care of them. Moreover they are in the States, not in London where Alfie lives and to look after them, he needs to move to Pennsylvania. Of course he can't abandon them and there will begin a new life to Alfie and his new big family. I admit I'm a sucker for those kind of stories, I adore reading about children and the first meeting with Griffin and Lily left me with puffy eyes. I loved the nuggets. The book caught my attention from the start. It was hard to put my kindle down and deal with my RL. I liked the characters, all of them, especially cause I usually enjoy a large support cast and here we had so many great second characters I'd love to read more of. One more thing I loved was how easily Alfie accepted his desire for Fear, no second thoughts, no issues to solve, he just followed his heart and body. The only reason why I'm giving Succumbing To His Fear “only” 4 stars is due to the mystery part, so unreal, it simply didn't convince me. But if you can overcome the trite ending, you will find the novel by River Mitchell a pleasure to read. I surely will read the next book in the series about Tate and Talon. Can't wait! Beautiful cover by Jay Aheer.

I loved Fear and Alfie! I loved them separately but together I loved them even more. The whole family was the best. I'll let you get to know them on your own. I was engaged in this story and read it in one sitting. My heart was a little saddened at the beginning from Alfie’s story and especially the letter from his father, but as soon as the little Nuggets, aka, Griffin and Lily come into the story, I started to feel the love and my heart was constantly being filled. Griffin at times, broke my heart with his fear of losing people he loves but Lily balances it by bringing in the classic kid no-fear one-liners like – “Wow you’re big. Are you a cuddle monster? Like Sully?” Lily was asking 6’8” Fear that when she first saw him. His response? “I have no idea who Sully is, Angel, but I do love to cuddle.” At that moment I laughed and fell in love with Fear. How could I not? Fear was just that, a cuddle monster, and a protective teddy bear behind his big tatted up frame, especially if you were lucky to be the few who were in his circle. He was never good with expressing his emotions in words, but definitely could in actions. Alfie just got him. He understood Fear. Fear thought Alfie’s “word vomit” as Alfie calls it when there is silence was perfect. These two were complete opposites of each other, yet were amazing together. The compassion, respect and love that they showed each other was heart warming. They never pushed each other and let the pieces fall together naturally. River Mitchell wrote a brilliant story bringing these two men into each other’s lives. There was suspense and at times, I found myself holding my breath. There were twists throughout the story that kept me reading. There was sweetness and romance and found myself awing more times than not. There was deep understanding and I wish everyone could find that in everyone else. There was humor and I was laughing out loud that at times I looked around to see if anyone was watching me even though I was alone. Whether you believe in soulmates or not, River Mitchell had Alfie express it the best as Alfie had always been straight before meeting Fear, but felt that immediate connection and knew he was the one for him. “If you felt it, you felt it…Labels were for people who needed to define everything so they could make sense of it for themselves. I had always preferred to just live my life and let everyone live theirs.” My only thought that could have made this story better would have been more physical description of the characters. I had a difficult time trying to make a mental visual of a complete Alfie and Fear, aside from their eye color. Overall, I would recommend this story to everyone. This story has a little bit of everything in a good storyline that touches all the emotions. The secondary characters were just fabulous and added a lot of depth. I am looking forward to what River Mitchell will write next and will most definitely grab it to read. *I received a free copy of this book to read for Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.*

I was little worried when I saw this was the author's first book seeing as they usually have a bunch of misspelled words, words used incorrectly etc. Not so here. It was obviously edited by someone other than the author. Yay! The only thing keeping it from a 5-star read was being told a lot of the story instead of "feeling" it. I think that may be due to the first person dual POVs. And thank you for the dual POVs. I love seeing both sides to a story. Alfie and Fear were just the cutest. I want to be her! We had a bit of a mystery along with our romance and it kept me turning the pages until the wee hours. Super enjoyable. There was a fairly large cast of characters in this one so I'm hoping for a whole series based on them. I know we get Talon's story next. Can't wait!

JOSIE'S REVIEW I was so thrilled to finally get my hands on Succumbing to His Fear. I happen to be a fan of m/m novels, but what makes a good m/m read for me is a story within a story. I need for the relationship to be natural, a slow build and built on life experiences. Succumbing to His Fear was that kind of story. This book had me feeling a sense of contentment and I smiled more times than I can count. It was such a pleasant change. Succumbing to His Fear was that kind of story. This book had me feeling a sense of contentment and I smiled more times than I can count. It was such a pleasant change. I was so engrossed and lost in the writing descriptions and story, I felt like I was there. I felt everything the characters felt in this story the feelings, conflicts, fears, desires and passion. We meet Alfie, after his father’s death he becomes the caretaker for his two younger siblings (these little ones stole my heart). Alfie is determined to take care of his siblings and give them a life he has always wanted. Along the way he meets Fear. Fear and Alfie have an instant attraction, a connection of sorts, but for Alfie these feelings are foreign, he has never been drawn to a male before. What follows is Alfie sorting out his very confused feelings for Fear and coming to terms with it. These two characters are so lovable. They are two different personalities but together they are one. Alfie has some oddities to his personality but he is so sweet, caring and giving. He loves his siblings with everything in him. From a single man with no responsibilities we see him turn into a man that will do anything for his family. FEAR, OMG!! I love him he is a total alpha male, he is closed off but when it comes to Alfie he is anything but. This is why these two work well together, where Alfie is more laid back and second guessing his feelings, Fear is a go getter. Fear knows what he wants and he isn’t afraid to push Alfie. Fear and Alfie are so protective of their very unusual and unique family structure. Finally they both have something that neither knew was missing and that is a family, real love and a purpose in life. When their lives face being torn apart, Alfie and Fear both fight not lose all they have accomplished. There are so many twists that happen in this book, which only made this story better than I imagined. I loved how the author takes readers on this journey with new experiences. I found myself not wanting this story to end. I loved the relationship and communication between Alfie and Fear. Reading every new experience with Alfie was so captivating. Fear was such a thoughtful lover. He was patient and helped coax Alfie through this feelings and experiences. I can’t wait to see what else River Mitchell will bring this in the future.

A light & fun romance, very entertaining Very hard to summarize the story because so much happened : friends, crazy families (literally and figuratively), love, suspense, kids,…My English is not good enough to be able to express it all in a few words. I raised my eyebrows when I started that book. As mentioned my GR Friend Amanda : utterly unbelievable and cheesy. And yet, yet..it worked well, very well. Started off GREAT even though Fear was a bit of a girl, and Alfie was super nonchalant about being attracted to a man for the first time. It's all a bit fantastical, but it's one of those feel good reads where it's all a little syrupy, but it makes you smile and teary eyed so you don't overthink it. Very low angst romance-wise, so it's all just moving along and everyone's getting along, and everyone loves everyone and then BAM! Murder mystery. No thank you. DNF @ 85%. Disappointing since I actually liked the couple.

Before meeting Alfie and his family, Fear was content with his casual hookups and one-night stands, purposefully keeping everyone at an arm’s length. As Alfie comes into his burgeoning feelings, a curveball shakes the two men, threatening to destroy Fear and his new found chance at happiness with Alfie. With everything thrown into turmoil, Fear decides to fight for those he loves, Alfie and his family included. Will they be able to survive the collateral damage around them, or will they lose everything? My Review ~ Succumbing To His Fear is the debut book by author River Mitchell, and what a debut book it turned out to be. I was happily surprised because this story pretty much hit it out of the park for me, out of nowhere too! The story starts off with Alfie completely uprooting his life to move from England to the States in order to take over guardianship of his much younger siblings. Now from the moment you meet Alfie you can see he's a sweetheart and is dealing with quite a bit from his past and now his new future. It makes you want to wrap this young man up tight and give him hugs for days. Not only does he have to parent his siblings that he's never met but he's moving away from his family and all his friends. So with life throwing him an unexpected twist, he adapts as much as he can but still finds himself a bit lost with no one here to ground him. If Alfie doesn't steal your heart then his brother Griffin and sister Lily most definitely will, because they are adorable. Griffin is dealing with a bunch of separation anxiety but little Miss Lily is a feisty girl who is ready to take the world on. After she gives her big brothers lots of love. Then they meet the tattooed mountain that is Fear and with him, all his friends. Fear, his sister Hailey, and the family that they've made with their friends is a force to be reckoned with. They are fiercely loyal and protective of each other. They're all just a touch intimidating as a group, especially for Alfie. Even if he can't keep his eyes off Fear, even though he isn't sure why he can't look away. Fear has always known he'd find the One... and from the moment he lays eyes on Alfie well let's just say Fear is smitten. If a 6ft 5, grumpy gus can be smitten that is. Yes, Succumbing To His Fear is a bit of an Insta-Love book, but really Alfie and Fear together are about as perfect as you can get. They honestly are the one person that makes the other one complete, even at the start when they're just friends they have that bond. It just steadily strengthens and grows throughout the book. They really are a case of opposites attract but in the best way possible. Fear is a protector, Alfie is a nurturer, and between the two of them they make the entire group stronger. Succumbing To His Fear is a great first book, it shows off this author's writing skills with a strong well paced storyline, and a solid cast of main and secondary characters. She added in enough humor to make you laugh out loud, enough seriousness and emotions to make you sniffle, and just a touch of suspense to give it that added zing. I know after reading this I've found a new author to add to my one to watch list. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys Riley Hart, or Felice Stevens.

He travels to the USA to meet "the nuggets" and takes on the responsibility of raising them. He meets 'Fear' in a diner, 6ft 8', man of very few words, built like a behemoth, tatted and owner of a Tattoo shop, they feel a connection and after a less than stellar first meeting, bump in to each other at a bar and Alfie wakes the following morning, naked in Fear's bed with his hand on his arse.....and no recollection...... and so it begins....... Alfie is humorous, sarcy and full of wit, especially when he's nervous. His obvious adoration of his half-siblings is evident and they return it. Lily was super-cute as only a 3 year old can be. I struggled to identify Alfie in my head, there is no description of him as such, apart from two observations and him being tall and muscled was not the *voice* in my head.....and straight..... errrrrrr???? Fear was just a man mountain, not an articulate man, but has a soft heart for a small circle of very close friends and his sister, not one to openly seek people outside this group. So, his instant connection with Alfie was a huge deal. There were quite a number of additional characters, Sheridan is Alfie's mum and was just a card, full of wit and not afraid to voice an opinion or advice. There is Hayley, Fear's sister, her husband John, the boys from the tattoo shop, Ben - Sheridan's hubby......!!!! They all added to the story, but a few times I had to reread to get the characters sorted in my head! There are a couple of things I didn't enjoy about the story. For starters, there was no mention what so ever of a murder/mystery plot!! I don't read these. I thought this was about an English bloke, learning his way through forced parenthood, in a new country, finding love he didn't expect and maybe little drama round that. Nope.....this is an OTT corrupted police investigation into the murder of Fear and Hayley's druggie mum. Including a bizarre storyline that I did not feel invested in and after the third eye roll wanted to get off the merry-go-round. This went on for over half the book!!! There were also an usually high usage of "like a girl" insults, I'm not sure what this tried to accomplish, apart from irritate me and make Alfie sound like a twat. There were a few instances where I felt the author either overlooked an event to be too much trouble to write or just genuinely skipped it as of no importance - the first one being the first drunken night Alfie and Fear spent together talking.....you get nothing more than a passing comment, this was supposedly a huge event for both men, this is how the insta-love/connection started!! The second was at the police station - no dialogue of interviews or thought process for any of the characters, which was frustrating when it needed something clearer and more detailed to offset the crazy situation!! I have to say, that I did enjoy the story aside the murder plot, it was engaging and full of potential and I wished more pages had been given over to this. The ending is a HFN, the epilogue is 9 months down the line and Fear has "new family" who visit - setting it up for the sneak peek for the next book, his half-brother Talon. Overall, an entertaining debut story, not my usual type of read, but the sneak peek looks good, so will look out to read in the future.

The beautiful cover grabbed me right away on this one. I’m not usually a fan of children in my stories, but that didn’t bother me here. Alfie is a young British guy who is somewhat prone to panic attacks, though he pretty much has them under control at this point. After finding out his father (who had basically abandoned him at an early age, with no contact since) has died and left his two young children to Alfie, he heads to the U.S. to step up and take guardianship. I absolutely adored Alfie. He’s funny and cute, and takes on a lot of responsibility in a short amount of time. He meets Fear and the gang (takes a while to get past his name being Fear) while out dining with the kids (or nuggets, as he calls them). He and Fear feel an immediate connection, but misunderstandings keep that from going any further. When circumstances put them in the same path again, and Alfie gets to know Fear and the guys, he is happy to accept such friendships at a time when he really needs them. He decides life is too short and to follow his heart and take a chance on being with Fear. Now, Alfie is British, so I found this a bit more believable knowing how much more open they tend to be where sexual matters are concerned. It really just worked here. There’s a bit of instalove going on too, but again, it just seemed to work with these guys. There is a lot going on in this story, and it is the culmination of these events that somewhat forces these guys’ relationship on a fast track. Regardless, they were really good together. Fear is this big badass tattooed guy with a heart of gold, and Alfie is sweet, funny, also tattooed, and really easy to love. There are some great side characters here as well. Alfie’s mom is a hoot, and the kids were pretty adorable. I really do not like mentioning anything in my reviews about editing, as I often receive early, unpolished, versions. However, there were just so many typos, missing words, etc. that it continually pulled me from the story. One on almost every page is simply too much to ignore. There were also a few things that became too repetitive, such as “…like a girl” that were a bit bothersome. Those issues aside, this was a fun, exciting story by a first-time author that shows a lot of promise. There was fabulous dialog and sexy/sweet sex scenes along the way. It was a fast read that kept me turning pages right up to the end, and I will definitely be looking for more from River Mitchell in the future.

The characters in the book are perfect for each other, and you can not help be to fall in love with them all. Can not wait to read the next book in the series!

Once he arrives in a small town in New York state, he immediately falls in love with the little “nuggets” as he calls them, as well as the town. He makes some unlikely friends in the form of the local tattoo artist Fear. Fear falls for Alfie immediately, though Alfie identifies as straight – he just knows they have a connection. There is some other drama going on in town: Fear’s mother is murdered, Fear and his friends are looking like the likely suspects in the murder, people from Fear’s past are resurfacing with disturbing information and two people who couldn’t be more opposite are falling in love. ** This – I believe- is the debut book for this author – River Mitchell and it’s AMAZING! I was captivated from the moment I started. Alfie’s character and his mother are what hooked me right away. Alfie is so self-effacing and sweet but snarky and funny that I loved being in his head when it was his POV. Though it doesn’t always work well, the POV alternated between Alfie and Fear and it worked tremendously in this case. Fear’s internal dialog is so different from Alfie that it was a lovely contrast. The drama did bog down the story toward the last third of the book, but only in a minor way. There were also moments where I had to – pretty firmly – suspend my disbelief – but only in the best, most imaginative ways. I loved this book very much and highly recommend it to fans of GFY, insta-love/soul mates, British humor, tattoos, artists, guys with kids, and big sexy MCs. 4.5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this entire story! Alfie, (so cute) found out that his absetee father had been killed in an accident with his wife, making him the guardian of his little brother and sister that he had no idea existed. So, moving to the states to be the parent they now needed, he fell in love with them immediately. And who wouldn't they were so stinkin cute. Fear, who was out for dinner one night with his honrary brothers, meets Alfie and his *Nuggets* as he likes to call the kids, he knows immediately there is a connection with him and even though he's big and scary lookin', no one is afraid of him, least of all the kids who seem to fall in love with him too. After a tragedy has Fear going to the morgue and Alfie is there for him, from there it's one big mess of murders and framing people and bigotry.... It's a wild ride thats for sure, I don't wanna give too much away though, it's hard to explain without telling key details lol AND I'm a horrible explainer.... However, I absolutely loved the relationship between Fear and Alfie, I loved how much the little kids loved Fear and how they all adopted each other and Fears family and Alfie's family combined. I loved Alfies mom who was amazing to not only the kids, but the big kids as well. Taking them all under her wing, and he was a nut and hilarious. I can not wait to read about Tate and Talon, It's going to drive me crazy until it comes out. The majority of this book is so sweet and I just loved it, and the rest of it had me on the edge of my seat, turning pages like crazy, I didn't put it down until I was finished... It was that awesome. Don't pass it up! :) You won't regret it!

3.5 Stars Gay for you? Family drama? Humor? Falling in love/lust faster than the speed of light? Murder mystery? A main character who is genetically predisposed (his mama suffers from the same affliction) to saying what he thinks with no input from his brain? I laughed, groaned, complained, and read every word. I liked it. I succumbed in spite of myself.
