This book is a game changer for anyone owning their own business or wanting to become an Entrepreneur. I'm taking Darren Hardy's advice and listening to the audio book for a 2nd time (he says rather than reading 30 books, you should read 1 book 30x's). There was so much info jam packed into the book so in order to get all the knowledge and tips out of it, I'm working on round two. He even provides you with worksheets for each chapter so you can put the lessons into play. This is a must read! Darren Hardy has brought us the secrets of what it takes to building and running a successful business. This is not a 'how to' book. This is a 'You Can' book. You will learn what it takes to be a power player in any industry. And it's not all flowers and sunshine. Darren Hardy has made it clear. If you want to succeed in business, it will be a thrilling ride with scary turns and loops. But if you can embrace the fear, and have confidence in your vehicle, you will succeed.

As a subscriber to Success magazine for several years, I've gained huge value from Darren Hardy and his insights over the years. This book is full of inspiration and targeted to a broad audience of entrepreneurs. I found it lacked in specific guidance (despite the worksheets and extra resources). The storytelling is good and the book is worth reading but could have been better.

I went in expecting cheesy one liners, over the top motivation with a few practical bits of advise sprinkled throughout. What did I receive? I thought this was the most inspiring and eye-opening book I've read. At 22 years of age, this book taught me the key basics I need to pursue my tech startup dreams in Big Data. It helped eliminate the self inflicted fears and the false misconceptions of traditional leadership or what makes a business successful.

This book is one of the best books about entrepreneurship and following your goals that I have ever read. First of all, it has a lot of real-life situations and action points. The story felt like an exciting journey through life; that is why it was effortless to follow. I really liked points that the author makes because they are pretty simple and motivates you to take actions. This is the kind of a book I want to reread from time to time. Going to ride this rollercoaster!

Elon Musk said that starting a company is like "staring into the abyss and eating glass" You can find passion in many ways: in the what (action) and why you are doing it, who you are doing for, how perfectly are you doing it. You can measure is you are really passionate about one thing if you are willing to dedicate ALL of your time to it. Including the sundays. The only difference between Steve and Steve Jobs is that he was willing to dedicate ALL of his time bec Passion is required to succeed. The only difference between Steve and Steve Jobs is that he was willing to dedicate ALL of his time because he was in love with his cause. Moreover, you should distinguish your strengths, what you want to fight and die for. Secondly, you have to become a freak (a person who is obsessed with or unusually enthusiastic about a specific interest). If people like you then you are doing sth bad. Get comfortable when people dislike you, laught at you. This means you are different and they (all the people especially the closest ones will discourage you) as crabs not because they are against you although you feel like that because they are attacking a strong believe that you have. They do that uncounciously because It is easier to discourage and make fun of you and your ideas so they reinforce their lifestyle instead of questioning the foundation principles of their Life. DEFINE SUCCESS for you. Be aware that there will definetely be more dark days than bright sinny ones. If you push yourself, you will fail and be knocked down, success consists in not quitting and getting up as soon as possible. If you are going to get BETTER, you have to push yourself, if you push yourself then you are going to fail. IF YOU ARE NOT FAILING, YOU ARE NOT PUSHING. Failing is part if getting better. In fact, you should fall in love with fail and as a uncountrollable lover you should SEEK FAILURE DESPERATELY. People really don't care about you so do not waste any second on trying to satisfy others. If there is a light breezle they surely stay warm in their house instead of attending your funeral. These rejection of the people should make their opinion indifferent to you. Sales its everything if you want to run a successful business. The person who knows how to GET, KEEP & CULTIVATE A CUSTOMER gets paid the most. Nothing matters until you sell sth. You can have a truly promising idea with a thoroughly business plan or even the dream team that THERE IS NO BUSINESS UNTIL THERE'S A SALE. 1.Empathy is the key to sell. Perceive a need and try to satisfy it. Ask questions to assure there's a need. Thus, learn HOW TO ASK BETTER QUESTIONS. 2.HELP. Change the perception selling is not a way to get sth, It is a tool for giving. (not purely sell, this change of perspective in your mind will unconsciously make positive changes in your sales level). 3.Put in the other people's shoes when they come home exhausted and throw into bed, what do they think about? What worries them? What fills them with hope? What are their objectives? Think like them and write all your thoughts on a piece of paper. That's the LANGUAGE you want to adapt when you are trying to sell, the LANGUAGE of EMPATHY. 4. Sell as JOHN LENNON, the real state agent, he sells buildings in complete different ways by asking questions, identifying the strongest desire/whim/need of the costumer and realizing a sell strategy that focuses on fulfilling it. He sold a parking lot for 3 millions, instead of saying an appartment. 5. Sell through TRUSTFUL sources, in a world bombarded by information and attention catchers people numb themselves and only pay attention the stuff that unconscious passes their attention filters, if a friend recommends you a thing you are more willing to consume it. Create bridges to contact everyone, everyone is willing to, take the first step. 6. Sell in BULK, quicker than one by one. 7. Focus on your 10% best consumers because they generate 90% of your sales. The marketing has to be directed to them, your objective is to maintain them and your business will survive. To identity this group 3 requisites have to verify: easy to contact them (not costly), fast and profitable. 8. Be like a CHILD. Childs are PERSISTENT as HELL. Hate me or LOVE me, but not indifferent. Make the costumers really choose. "I lose one out of five customers for being too AGGRESSIVE. But, I GET THE OTHER FOUR". HIRING: Entrepreneurs are hopeless romantics. Which makes us terrible mánagers, get help. DO NOT HIRE based on POTENTIAL, hire DOERS and current SKILLED persons. Warren Buffet looks for INTEGRITY, INTELLIGENCE & ENERGY. He warns that if they do not posses the first quality they will end up working against you. 1. Only A's. They attract more A's as magnets. 2. People faster, smarter, with more skills than you. If you are a B don't hire Cs to fell superior. 3. It is better to spend more money in a high wage than trying to cut costs because a bad hire will be your the end of the game. 4. Think like these: it is not that you have the real chance of hiring A's but if you really want to succeed their is no other option. 5. You and only you have to make the recruitment process or at least the final election, if not you are doomed to fail. 6. Be the dumbest person in the room. If you have a better idea than your Mkt director we are in trouble. 7. What ATTRIBUTES do you want? What are you searching for? 8. Never list the compensation plan. Say much better than market standard. People look for certain characteristics in a job: 1.PEOPLE that are alike, good vibes and interesant people. The only way to implement a value in a culture is by hiring people that already have this value. 2. Opportunity and challenge: 3. Making an impact and feeling engaged doing meaningful work. 4. Money The only constraint to keep growing is the leader a.k.a you and your ambition. The market, the opportunity, everything is there, It's up to you to set the pace, clear the obstacles, get the resources and create conversations to grow the company faster. Do not fall in the TRAP of being BUSY instead do the essential parts of your job and try to master and do them as long as possible. You can even TIME YOURSELF when you are realizing a crucial task. Be a quitter and delegate the non-essential tasks of the business. Delegation requires humility. You have to get from doing EVERYTHING to NOTHING except leading. The most important thing to manage properly a business is to manage yourself. Become a 21st cent. LEADER. Lead by being the ROLE MODEL and the others will imitate and follow you. The necessary and utmost condition to be successful is having the ability to saying "NO" 99% times. And when you say yes you have to think about the opportunity cost. If your response is NOT A HELL YEAH! DON'T EVEN CONSIDER IT. SUCCESS HAS LESS TO DO WITH WHAT WE CAN GET OURSELVES TO DO AND MORE WITH KEEPING OURSELVES FROM DOING WHAT WE SHOULDN'T. An inbox is actually a modern day mailroom, don't work in a mailroom. Moreover, you have to focus only in your bigger three PRIORITIES and throw the rest away. Track them daily or even hourly so that you don't sidetrack. Reflection: You are not the most hard working neither the laziest person. Being the most hardworking person does not translates in earning the most neither completing all your objectives. People strike many holes searching for oil nevertheless they end up only with soil. Thus, reading a thing does not mean you master it. You have to reread it, study it, learn it and chiefly APPLY it and DO IT. If not you are the most stupid person I know, you are hardworking only to become MASTER OF NOTHING. You can OUTRAN the others by sticking really to one hole until you master it and end up finding oil. We have a tendency to say that book, seminar, etc didn't work. No its you that didn't do the work. Each quarter I figure out what skill is the most needed to advance my BIG 3 GOALS. I then attack it: buy 5 better books on the topic, top three video programs and a seminar. EVERY DOLLAR YOU INVEST IN YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT ADDS THIRTY TO YOUR BUTTOM LINE. COURAGE is not the absense of fear, it is the triumph over fear. Our brain response to fear is wholly outdated. Therefore we are wired the same as the Old Age. Nevertheless there as certain ways to hack the brain and act regardless of FEAR: 1) SHUT OFF your brain: in reality it takes only 20 SECONDS a day to be considered courageous. 2)Focus on the TASK, not the outcome: the outcome pressurizes us but focusing in a task that has been successfully completed many times. Just like a playmaker. 3) Make it REAL: put things in perspective. Are you going to die? No, then go for it. 4) ANTICIPATION: the fearmeter uphill usually comes previous to the action because you start paranoying yourself with hypotheticall situations. Then, when you do the action there was no need for all that anxiety. 5) MAKING FAILURE &FEAR FUN: failure is usually our innermost fear. Actually, failure is good, you must love it, seek it desperately. It has to become your routine, your obsession. "How bad you really want to succeed? The more failures the more success." It works like a pendulum and the vast majority of the popularion only gravitate less from side to side (the PENDULUM of failure-success). 6) PRACTICE: do what you fear over and over again until you don't fear it and your weakness will become your strength. Don't let learning translate into knowkedge convert it to actions. Be a doer not a fool wise man. Translate learnings into wealth. Don't miss the point, have your WHY always present because if not your ego and ambition can sidetrack your whole point and regret it. Derek Sivers complementary notes: Know that your job is going to suck 95% of the time or do you think that Oprah Life is always awesome she is full of endless meetings, lawsuits, contract negociations, transportation, etc. Being successful in business requires an enotional charge if that charge is above you then you are going to perform better. Remember: we always UNDERPERFOM. Do not get involved in functions that scape your circle of competency, Warren Buffet. Believing that inborn gifts and talents is the start to become successful is a lie that your brain believes because it is easier to live like that and not support the enormous and real pressure that the only requisite that is impeding you to make it in whatever field is only you. That takes away the burden of expectation and the distressing comparisons. The fundamentals of success are simple and easy, getting yourself to stick to them is the difficult part. DON'T MAKE IT EVEN MORE DIFFICULT BY CONFUSING YOURSELF WITH TO MANY ARBITRARY OPTIONS & CONFLICTING IDEAS. "I had houses. Too many houses. I invested money. Money! I should hace been investing my heart. What I needed was more people. More relationships." -"If you could come back and live the life of anyone, who would you want to come back as?" +"I would want to come back as the man I could have been, but never was".

This time, it is 66% of small businesses and the reason for their demise is mostly due to their own inaction. Entrepreneur Darren Hardy has written a mixture of business autobiography and self-help inspirational guide, looking at the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Running your own business does test your emotions to the max. Many compare it to parenting. There will be a lot of highs and pride-filled moments but also some very frustrating, soul crushing lows. We are all different. For this reviewer, the information provided was interesting and helpful - it is just the style and the way the book is put together was grating. It needs a sequential read and a bit of patience to get the most out of it, pulling some of the key points into the limelight with a pair of pliers. It is worth the roller coaster relationship you might form with it though! The author brings some very incisive, often-overlooked points to the party that can be equally applicable to regular corporations. How many leaders and managers forget they are still sales people at heart, as the author notes: “Even if you have a sales force selling your product for you, you’re still going to be selling “big ideas” to partners and “the vision” to your employees. You’re going to be selling to new recruits persuading them to join you, banks to back you, vendors to trust you, and the manufacturers that make your product to speed up production and keep up the great work. You’re going to be convincing people to do their best. You’ll be asking people to lower their prices. You’re going to push, pull, persuade, negotiate, wheel, and deal. You’re going to sell. All day. Every day. That’s business.” Entrepreneurs are chided for hiding away from sales opportunities, noting that many tend to wrongly spend their time focussing on to-do lists, email checking, social media monitoring, endless meetings or paperwork. These can be necessary evils, but selling needs to be king. Maybe you don’t like the word “SELL” for whatever reason. Why not use the author’s suggestion of replacing this with “HELP” - so look how you can help others, look how your product or service can address someone’s deepest need or fear, consider what problem does it solve and articulate how it can make a positive difference? “Stop selling. Help instead,” as the author forcefully points out, adding “… if what you have doesn’t help? Then you’ve either got the wrong prospect or the wrong product.” So style and packaging notwithstanding – and this can be a highly personal thing – the book does deliver a lot of interesting, thought provoking ideas and concepts that may help you sustain and possibly transform your entrepreneurial activities. It appears to be one of the more credible books of its kind. The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster, written by Darren Hardy and published by Greenleaf Book Group. ISBN 9780990798620, 272 pages. YYYY
