I had difficulty reading the rhythm of the rhyme and feel that this age group would encounter the same experience. This lack of rhythm interfered with the flow, and rhyme should flow. There was one area of the story that caused me some consternation. Sophie is trying to guess what her present is and has some very different ideas until she learns it is an egg. We, and Sophie, learn that the egg must be kept warm until it hatches and is covered with a blanket. Sophie has many guesses again, this time involving live creatures that could reasonably come from an egg. THEN she guesses toys. This line is followed by her exclaiming “About time!” when a crack appears in the egg. A grade two student would be disappointed in this off the wall guess that Sophie made. And so was I. I like the idea behind this story, but feel that prose would have been a better vehicle for it.

What cute rhyming fun for kids to enjoy and the illustrations will have children glued to the pages. A really cute surprise in the special egg for Sophie and this book is a winner.
