   A holiday 2015 read. Why has our country not heeded Robert Maynard Hutchins book from 1943? We have had plenty of time to see the results of teaching our children to be venture capitalists in materialism. This book may be some late season presents to a few. Thank you Carl Sagan.

   A short read from Carl Sagan's reading list. Yes, it's dated, but Hutchins's discussion of higher ed reform, and why a liberal education for all is crucial for fulfilling our individual potential as well as preserving our democracy, is still relevant. My favorite part was his searing critique of modern materialism: “The law of human beings is wisdom and goodness, not unlimited acquisition.” What he wrote in the The Great Conversation: The Substance Of A Liberal Education is also worth reading.
