Dear Author, I’m running out of time to prepare something delicious, errr… edible for my date. I mean, friend. I mean… Okay, okay, I had a bet with a friend, whom I’ve been infatuated with since… forever! We’ve been roommates in college. He’s an out and proud and smart gay guy. Anyway, we haven’t seen each other since college days and yesterday I bumped into him at the supermarket. I was there helping my pregnant neighbor with groceries and he with his own list to buy. He just moved a few blocks down from my place. We talked while queuing to pay, and I don’t know how he turned up challenging me to prove that straight men can cook. It just did. I’m not straight. And I can’t cook. And why the hell did I have to prove anything to him? Please help me out with this. And if you can somehow make him eat his words, or eat me, I would be delighted! Russ has had a secret crush on Tristan since forever. So secret that he hardly admits it even to himself. Russ runs into Tristan in the supermarket, and Tristan provokes him to prove that straight men can cook. Well, you’ll never figure it out from this story since Russ is not exactly straight. And he is not exactly good in the kitchen either. But fortunately nothing disastrous happens and by the time the dinner is done, so is he with denial. It is a cute and sexy story. Recommended.

This story is pretty slight. I'm giving it a generous three because it was harmless. A little bit cute, a little bit sexy, but mostly kind of bland. Largely because the characters are bland. I mean, sure boring people deserve love, too, and I hope all you boring people find one another! But it was kind of dull to read. Despite Russ and Tristan's time at college together they don't seem to know each other well, or have been very close, and all the attraction expressed is in regards to appearance. Once, a few pages from the end, one of them mentions liking the other for being nice. That's simply not going to get me invested in this relationship. Also, as far as I calculated the characters are 25. Why do they keep talking about being old?

3.5 Stars For such a short freebie, this felt fully realized and plausible in only 30 pages. Nicely sexy, this would also serve as a great little interlude for something fun and light. I sound like a broken record when it comes to good DRitC’s - if only this was longer and where is the full version of this smexy story!?

3.5 stars Felt compelled to write an opinion since the prompt was written by an Indonesian friend *grin* (Hi Didi ). I thought the story fit the prompt perfectly. It was a pure fluffety fluff friends-to-lovers theme... although well, I take it as HFN since the story happened within 1.5 days. I don't think this could possibly happen in real life, but it was cute and mildly funny. *shrug* Yes, Russ was a bit too accepting of his newly discovered sexuality, and yes, Tristan was a bit of an idiot for pining and not acting on it for years, and yes, the pseudo-dirty talk was disappointing as always, but... well, okay, maybe after all this deserves two stars and not three. But as far as "it was okay" ratings go, this one was very okay. 3.5 Sweet fluffy short that fit the cute picture prompt really well. Russ and Tristan were roomies in college for about 6 months, and yes you guessed it, they each were eyeing the other, thinking sexy wishful thoughts. But alas, neither one did anything about it and they lost touch, now while fondling melons who does Russ run into? Yep, again you got it in one. Tristan. So after Russ braving the kitchen and actual food and Tristan braving eating it, they get to the fun parts. Watching an action movie. 3.5 Sweet fluffy short that fit the cute picture prompt really well. 3.5 stars Russ is not gay, right? Except he did lust after his roommate, Tristan, all through college. And when he meets up with said roommate a couple of years later, he get roped into cooking for him. Now all Russ needs is the courage to make a move. Nice friends-to-lovers story. Not much else going on since it’s only 27 pages. A sweet, enjoyable story.

There's nothing like a good, old-fashioned challenge to bring out the best in people – and, in this case, to set the stage for an exploration of mutual feelings that should have happened three years ago. Told in a humorous way, with lots of funny comments about lack of cooking skills, this short story turns out to be about far more than Russ's disputed abilities in the kitchen. Russ cannot believe he ran into his old college roommate/crush in the grocery store. Except, he denies the crush part so vehemently, that I kept thinking "Russ, thou dost protest too much". Back in college, Russ still thought he was straight and even now, when he is again faced with the temptation who is his ex-roommate Tristan, he keeps telling himself he is straight. It's the easier option as he sees it, and yet…prolonged exposure over dinner and a movie prove his undoing. Tristan may mock Russ's ability to cook, and challenge him to prove he knows how to prepare "real food", but he is clearly interested in sampling more than Russ's culinary delights. Even though he has no real reason to suspect anything more behind Russ's sudden interest to keep him around after the meal, he is curious enough to stick around. And when he finally puts two and two together and figures out that Russ is trying to seduce him, he jumps at the opportunity to finally see more than the odd bit of skin. If you like stories about men who try very hard to pretend they're straight when it’s glaringly obvious they are at the very least bi, if you enjoy reading about old friends meeting up years later under new circumstances, and if you're looking for a read that is as sweet as it is funny, then you will probably like this free short story.

Two ex college roommates, Russ and Tristan, met at grocery store years after graduation. One ended up challenging the other to prove that he can cook. Russ's anxious that the old roomie he'd lusted after years ago would not only come but also eat his cooking. But the cooking fiasco may turn a beginning he never imagined he'd have with his old friend. A round up of 3.75 stars! . A short adorable story with adorable characters. Well that was beyond adorable. :D Such a cute premise and as always the history between these two makes everything in this short work better. Sappy sweet, with it’s own fair share of HOT and STEAMY thrown in. Russ is unassuming and the boy next door everyone adores. While he’s always dated girls (they’re just easier all around) he’s always had a secret attraction to guys; to one guy especially, his old college roommate. Now while out grocery shopping with a neighbor, who does he bump into but hi Well that was beyond adorable. :D Such a cute premise and as always the history between these two makes everything in this short work better. While he’s always dated girls (they’re just easier all around) he’s always had a secret attraction to guys; to one guy especially, his old college roommate. Now while out grocery shopping with a neighbor, who does he bump into but his old college crush. Tristan has always been openly gay and yet since he was always the life of the party adored by all. Never the flamboyant one he got along with everyone gay or straight. But his old college roommate was always the one he wanted. Russ was just so drool worthy and he didn’t even know it. Only problem, he was straight. Now years later it’s a little shocking to see him again. Of course a bet over whether straight men can cook or not is the perfect way to finagle dinner and some personal time with the man of his dreams, even if he is out of reach. Awwww two adorable guys secretly lusting over each other for years. The college roommate scenario is tried and true for a reason. It just works. I had to giggle over the idea that the only way a straight guy can cook is over the grill. Hehehe. That’s certainly the case with most of the guys I know. Put them in front of a grill and they’re master chef. Require them to do any sort of real cooking and it’s like someone trying to explain astro-physics. (Granted I’m not any better in the kitchen. It’s deplorable actually.) I really enjoyed the build up between these two as Russ tried to psych himself into or out of doing anything to act on his attraction to Tristan. I loved how clueless Tristan was until it was smacking him in the face. Of course beer is always the great equalizer. Liquid courage after all. If I had one slight criticism it’s that when Russ does finally give in it seemed like all his previous hesitations hadn’t really happened. It felt less like a decision to go for it anyway, and more like he’d just been waiting for the opportunity all those years. Really enjoyed the author’s voice here and would definitely be looking to try more by the author. This was cute, sweet, and made me giggle, all worthwhile attributes in a book. 4.5 stars overall. Not much detracts from this one, just wish I’d gotten to know a little more deeper feelings from these two.

This 2013 DRitC book popped up in my feed 2 days in a row, both times with a 4 star rating. I took that as a sign that I needed to get with the program so I did. I'm happy to report that I fully concur and I'm adding my own 4 stars to this cute little story. The smokin sexy times are an added bonus! This was just what I needed. Thanks Donna & Laura! This was very cute. Taking into account the fact that it has only 30 pages, I'm surprised it managed to "tell" and "show" the reader so much. I only had issues with the occasional grammar mistakes. This was very cute. Taking into account the fact that it has only 30 pages, I'm surprised it managed to "tell" and "show" the reader so much. Cute couple; a refreshing short story without pretensions of being more than it is - a light quick read. I like the characters. Well, what a pleasant surprise... With that title, I was convinced I would find something I'd definitely end up not really liking. However, this story was pretty different from what I expected, in a very good way! It was funny, and awkward in a sweet way. It was also really hot, in just the right measure. Plus, the characters were adorable. It was exactly the kind of story I'm always in the mood for. Well, what a pleasant surprise...
