I'm not paleo, but paleo is gluten free, so all these recipes work for me. Nice range of stuff and not the usual suspects. I'll definitely be cooking some of these. I am thrilled with Arsy’s new cookbook. Long a reader of her Rubies & Radishes blog and a fellow Santa Cruz resident myself, I was anxious to try The Paleo Foodie. So now that I have this breathtakingly beautiful hard-cover book in my hands, what can I say about it? Quite a lot, it turns out. Firstly, the book is a work of art with a gorgeous cover (featuring lamb chops, one of my favorites), quality binding and spectacular photos. So now that I have this breathtakingly beautiful hard-cover book in my hands, what can I say about it? Quite a lot, it turns out. Firstly, the book is a work of art with a gorgeous cover (featuring lamb chops, one of my favorites), quality binding and spectacular photos. Liz Wolfe (whose book Eat the Yolks I also own and have reviewed) wrote the foreword which begins: “Because of Arsy, I fell in love with cooking.” I think this is one of the prime reasons to buy The Paleo Foodie, because Arsy not only makes cooking fun, she serves up truly exceptional recipes that burst with flavor and are easy to follow, no matter your cooking level of experience. In an email from Arsy, she told me her Pepper and Carrot Puree (p. 164) was her favorite in the book. While the thought of making/eating a veggie puree didn’t exactly crank my tractor, I was prepared to give this recipe a try. Whoa! Prepare to be amazed. The rich taste of organic red peppers and sweet paprika make this dish over-the-top supreme. Add a little grass-fed butter and a touch of balsamic vinegar and you’re in culinary heaven. How much do I like this dish? I’ve had the book 2 ½ weeks and today I’ll be making Pepper and Carrot Puree for the fourth time! I love that Arsy offers cooking tricks and tips in chapter one (Yes, all Paleo cookbooks have similar sections, but trust me, Arsy offers tips not found in other cookbooks such as why you’ll get better results if you bring the meat to room temperature before cooking it). The part on setting up the work station is especially helpful in the “making cooking fun” process. The second chapter covers fats and oils--which to use and which to avoid. On to the recipes! Six sections (chapters) cover Tasty Tidbits, Food Lover’s fare, Simply Sensational Salads, Soups & Stews for Every Season, Delectable Side Dishes (where you’ll find that amazing Pepper and Carrot Puree), and Sauces & Salsas from Scratch. Arsy’s Armenian heritage shows in her choice of several ethnic dishes. I’ve earmarked two to try: Persian Meatballs (p. 61) and the Osso Buco (p. 72) – with the grass-fed veal shanks I have awaiting in my freezer. Before going Paleo, I loved Tabbouleh and was delighted to see a cauliflower version (p. 131) to replace the bulghur. In the Sauce section, you’ll find a homemade Chipotle Peppers in Adobo sauce, an alternate to the canned version found in the supermarket. This is a sauce I use often, especially in a crema for tostadas (Paleo, of course). In conclusion, The Paleo Foodie belongs on your cookbook shelf. More importantly, it belongs on your cookbook stand, opened to one of Arsy Vartanian’s recipes that will make you fall in love with cooking all over again.

As a rather critical reader, it is rare for me to find a book I am immediately certain I need to own and mouth-wateringly eager to cook my way through… but this is one of those books! I was impressed right out of the gate by the well-thought-out tips on everything from purchasing ingredients, setting yourself up for success, and how to use the recipes to the clean, easy-reference charts for which fats to go to for which uses. I was also delighted to find that Vartanian struck the perfect balance As a rather critical reader, it is rare for me to find a book I am immediately certain I need to own and mouth-wateringly eager to cook my way through… but this is one of those books! I was also delighted to find that Vartanian struck the perfect balance with her recipes. Each was delectable and elegant, but still practical for a cook of modest skill. There were no bizarre, overly expensive, or hard-to-find ingredients, or strange combinations you can’t imagine getting friends or family to ever try. As the author notes, only some of these recipes are appropriate for quick weeknight meals, but all are completely reasonable for a weekend on which you’ve got just a little more time to pour yourself a drink, put on some music, and enjoy spending a little extra time making something special. On a technical note, the photography is beautiful and the pages clean, visually appealing, and easy to follow. Whether you eat Paleo full time or not, you are sure to find recipes in here that will become new favorites - I cannot recommend this enough!

So being a proclaimed foodie my entire life, I can say I have read through hundreds of cookbooks. "The Paleo Foodie" is by far my favorite cookbook! I have been Paleo for 2+ years and I don't buy Paleo cookbooks, I honestly like non-Paleo cookbooks. This one on the other hand is life-changing. Seriously! I have made 3 of the recipes in less than a week and can honestly say all 3 of them have been amazing! I have made the Thai Curry Mussels, Flank steak with cilantro sauce and the Sun-dried tomat So being a proclaimed foodie my entire life, I can say I have read through hundreds of cookbooks. I followed all of the recipes to a T and let me tell you Rubies and Radishes has done her research! They were all spot-on amazing! I would highly recommend this book to a Paleo newbie, Paleo expert or anyone who loves food in general. These Paleo recipes are real food, not to be mistaken for a diet food. I am so happy with this book! John Mack

As a regular user of Arsy's first cookbook I was sitting on the edge of my seat with anticipation for her latest book. As expected, Arsy knocked it out of the park with this one... I was happy to see a few organ meat recipes included since I can never figure out how to incorporate them into my family's meal rotation in a tasty easy-to-make manner. If you're short on time but want delicious healthy meals, I highly recommend The Paleo Foodie! You won't be disappointed! I don't follow the Paleo diet but I'm always interested in cookbooks. This book had a lot of delicious recipes that I'm looking forward to making, including carrot and pepper puree and honey citrus roasted parsnips among others. I like the Persian influence but it wasn't pervasive and there were so many good ideas to choose from. Looking forward to trying these recipes! Three stars. There are very few things that I would want to eat in here, and I'm not sure why. Normally these kind of meals appeal to me. Maybe I'm just in a mood? That being said, I think a lot of people could get serious mileage out of this book. So I think it's just me. Three stars. This is one of the first Paleo cookbooks I ever bought. I really enjoyed it, although, some of the recipes are a little more difficult than what I usually enjoy. However, they are all super freaking tasty!

From front to back, this is a beautiful cookbook full of "keeper" recipes that will impress anyone. I especially love the International flair of the recipes. And all the recipes I've tried so far are very simple to prepare, which is a big bonus. I would consider this a must have Paleo cookbook! Great ideas for both complicated and easy #paleo dishes. We loved the chicken mole, something I can't normally eat since I'm #glutenfree. Great ideas for both complicated and easy #paleo dishes. We loved the chicken mole, something I can't normally eat since I'm #glutenfree.
