Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) As Dietrich sang the German national anthem, he contemplated the devastation Hitler and the Nazis were perpetrating on Europe. Dietrich would do whatever he could to stop them, even if it meant pulling the trigger on the f hrer himself. He had thought about it from every angle, and his conscience was clear. Any kind of war story, always gets me. I was able to experience Dietrich's life as he grew up during World War 1 and died in it. Very cool seeing how he was involved in Hitler assassination attempts, freeing of some Jews, etc. The only reason it has 2 stars is because I didn't feel like it was as heavily immersed in Christian principles, it was extremely vague about his Christian life other than the fact that he went into theology and became a pastor. About the life of an honorable Christian man during a time of great tragedy and chaos. His story should inspire devotion and courage among any born again believer.

Good narration. Bonhoeffer is a great story to read especially knowing the context of his time.

I loved this short book about the heroic Christian pastor, Deitrich Bonhoeffer, who lived in Germany during the horrific Nazi reign of terror.

Wow! We learned a lot about German history from this book, and how Hitler duped people into loving him. The parallels of what is going on in America right now is scary.

This was a great listen. Very sad that this man's life ended before WWII ended. I learned a great deal from this, and it is alarming to me that many of the same trends that allowed Hitler's rise to power (similar trends to those that allowed Stalin's rise in Russia) are occurring in America today in our political arena, just as they did back then in post WWI Germany. If we do not learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.

Although written for elementary age children, this Christian Heroes Then & Now series is good reading for adults. Each title gives a short, but thorough, biography of men and women of faith. If you want to learn a bit about Christian missionaries or Christian leaders who have made a difference in the world, but you don't want to read a long, adult-length biography, these books will fit the bill nicely. Such a great book! I really enjoyed that it was such an easy read--listened to this on audio. It gave me a lot to think about, where God is taking me, how He can use me even in the seemingly insignificant moments, and how we can respond to injustice in the world around us. This book made me want to read some of Bonhoeffer's works and also some more biographies about more details on his life! Such a great book! A really good and easy to read biography. Knowing hardly anything about Bonhoeffer when opening the cover I closed it feeling a strong love and respect for the man. It has now inspired me to go visit his home in Berlin and to also read more of his work.

What makes this man so amazing is not only his murdered life but also his writings and teachings. Although I loved the synopsis of his life in this bio, I was hoping for more of his actual words. Incredible man. Incredible story.

This telling of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's life did a good job of including a lot of information in a manner that was not overwhelming. This is an amazing glimpse into how different believers reacted to Nazi control of Germany. As well, Bonhoeffer theological views are inspiring! How a German man stood up for his faith during World War II, and even became part of a plot to get rid of Hitler. Lots of detail about how people of faith were treated and how their rights were stripped. Sobering, but good read.

My kids got the faulty notion "all Germans" were Nazis or supported Hitler so I picked this book to show them that wasn't so. They were deeply moved by Bonhoeffer's dignity all the way to the end. My kids got the faulty notion "all Germans" were Nazis or supported Hitler so I picked this book to show them that wasn't so. Dietrich Bonhoeffer's story is one of courage and conviction, which leads him to act in bold ways. I'm always eager to fill my boys' minds with real-life stories like this... A solid, kid-level introduction to the life of Bonhoeffer, focusing equally on his childhood, formative years of travel and study outside Germany, and then, naturally, his participation in the plot to kill Hilter.

I listened to and read this biography simultaneously. It was a great biography on Bonhoeffer and his family, but also simply explained WWI and WWII and the events around the wars. It listed all the steps leading up to the wars, including the cultural, political and economic environment at the time. Though this book is geared towards introducing children to Christian heroes, it is a great foundation for any child or adult not familiar with Bonhoeffer or the history of Europe during this time peri I listened to and read this biography simultaneously. Though this book is geared towards introducing children to Christian heroes, it is a great foundation for any child or adult not familiar with Bonhoeffer or the history of Europe during this time period. Though he was a man of religion, it wasn't a book on theology, so I think it would be interesting to people curious in learning about this time period. I feel that I am prepared to read an "adult" version now, as there tends to be an assumption, sometimes, that certain knowledge has been already acquired or remembered when reading a book written for adults. There are fewer gaps in children's books as they are meant to be an introduction or foundational. 2nd Reading/Listen: This time I listened with my son. Still impactful the second time around. This time what stood out for me is the idea that leaders/countries outside of Germany chose to treat/think all Germans were Nazis, though this wasn't the case. I am sure through current eyes they would say that people that did nothing were complicit. However, there were many Germans that hated Hitler and attempted to kill him/bring him down, but it appeared it was hard to accept this idea that they weren't still Nazis.

I enjoyed this short biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer targeted to children. If you don't have time for a full tome ala Eric Metaxas, Benge & Benge have written a compelling summary of Bonhoeffer's life from secularist to theologist to pastor to spy. The authors make no judgement on Bonhoeffer's choices, but they do paint the events of his time that shaped his decisions. Bonhoeffer's conversion to spy has always perplexed me, and the Benges focus more on external factors that lead to his joining the conspiracy and the Abwehr as his cover. I would like to know more of the internal debate he went through to arrive at that decision. It could be, though, that while Bonhoeffer detailed many of his theological struggles in his journals and books, he did not record his conversion to treason out of concern it would be used against him or others. Perhaps I will have to get to the highly acclaimed and thorough Metaxas for more information on that point. The narrative can get rigid at points, but overall, this is a brief summary of a complicated life that I recommend for kids, families and adults.

We found the story of Dietrich’s life quite interesting. His family lived in Germany and he experienced World War I as a young man, and then grew up during the time between the wars. Germany was treated very harshly by the Allies after World War I, and suffered greatly. The people of Germany were desperate for a strong leader and relief from poverty and unrest, so when Adolf Hitler rose to power, he was accepted by most people as a solution to their problems. The Bonhoeffer family was leery from the start, and soon saw that Hitler was not the answer—but what could they do to stem the tide of evil? Read my full review here.

Nathaniel's Review: This book teaches about Dietrich Bonhoeffer's history and the attempts for the assassination of Adolf Hitler. This book was obviously a history book so i'm not a fan of those. But the christian heroes then and now series is very detailed and entertaining- for a history book.
