I feel like I now understand why Derrick Storm (view spoiler)[had to die (hide spoiler)] . I might be reading too much into things, but it seems to fit the excitement he then meets Beckett with. He is so ready to make sense of what´s close to him, to what he´s presently part of... As I said, I might be reading too much into things, but I am having a lot of fun with these. I might even go back to watching Castle, perhaps from the beginning. I might also have to get the rest of the series... Oh dear.

Plucked this off the shelf at the library this evening because, really, I've read a bunch of the Nikki Heat books, but never had the chance to check out the Derrick Storm stuff. I thought, Why not? It's unfortunate that the only one on the shelf was #3, so I came into the story a bit out of context. First impression: Considering that the Castle TV series is already pretty "meta" -- the Derrick Storm comic being about a PI whose life was turned into a TV series called "Palace" starring a small-time actor whose only real claim to fame previous was a sci-fi space opera... takes being "meta" to another very confusing level. (I mean, weren't the Derrick Storm novels all written before the events of Castle were meant to begin?) Laying that aside, the comic art was fine. Not particularly unique or mind-blowing, but it didn't distract or detract from the story. The story? I guess international spy thrillers are not really something I'm super emotionally invested in. Perhaps there were other story arcs that were resolved here that I would've been more invested in if I had read the other two volumes first. I'll see if I can dig them up. Read this in one sitting.

I have been waiting for this Graphic Novel since December when I finished Storm Season. I was not disappointed, in fact this one was even better than Storm Season was! Once again we are on the journey of Derrick Storm before he was presumed dead. I love Clara Strike and how she always comes to the rescue whenever Derrick needs her. The story continues in a natural way and along the way we continue to find out more things about Derricks childhood. His father, who is ever the comic relief in these Graphic Novels, sometimes even more than Derrick himself, plays more of an important role i this one and I enjoyed that as well. The illustrations are completely stunning! You definitely could not read this if you had not read the first two but other than that you really do not need much insight into the Castle-verse to read them. Focusing a lot on Derricks family in this one gave the novel a different feel and I really enjoyed that. Overall the only question that remains is when does Storm's Break come out and will it be as good as A Calm Before Storm?!? :D

If the other Storm Graphic novels were must reads for Castle fans then this one is doubly so. Just for the reference at the beginning of the story to a TV show detective with a royal lodging type of name. It is hilarious. Also the story was very exciting as Storm and his father hunt his mother's killer. Can Derrick avenge his mothers death? More importantly can he survive a mission with his father? I read this sometime last year (2013) but didn't add it to Goodreads at the time for whatever reason. Realized that when I went to add the new one (Unholy Storm) to my currently-reading shelf. I don't remember much about Calm Before Storm, but it was probably 3.5 stars, much like the previous books in this series. What a page-turner! I just couldn't put this one down and read it all in one sitting. Russian assassins! Moles in the CIA! Epic plot twists! Can't say more for fear of giving anything away, but if you're a true fan of "Castle" these are must-reads. What a page-turner! I just couldn't put this one down and read it all in one sitting. I really enjoyed this graphic novel. It was interesting to find out who the mole was. I will have to read more of the Derrick Storm graphic novels.

Not as fun than the first two - no introduction and no afterward, and a generally less entertaining story.

I'll be honest one of the those stars is for the art. The art is very good. The story is mediocre. This is a tie-in with Castle. I have to think if Richard Castle was this blah, he wouldn't have afforded that home he had on the show. I've not seen the first two Derrick Storm graphic novels nor do you have to. This one can best be summed up as Derrick's past is back to haunt him and kill him if it can. He finds out the truth about his ex-love interest, his mother's death and his father's real job. It's utterly forgettable as in literally I just finished this and I can't even remember how it began or the point of it other than it can be summed up as 'Russian spy thriller.' Naturally Derrick and his dad are going to triumph in the end and the bad guys captured. It follows along just as you'd expect with no real twists. The only memorable thing was they somehow get blamed for a shooting that they have to get out of even though they were with witnesses when the shooting happened and it made no sense. I mean literally, they were with the secretary when the shots were fired and yet they're blamed. I would have quit there but this is short so it wasn't worth stopping.

Weirdly, I found this to be less plausible, and therefore less interesting, than the first one I read of this series. I say "weirdly" because the whole thing was pretty strange and implausible to begin with, which makes this one just too far over the top. Among other things, it's too self-referential, with one character being a weird combination of Richard Castle and Remington Steele. For another, I just found the story difficult to swallow. I think that Peter David was trying a little to hard for outrageous, and forgot that even with an outrageous story, some restraint can be good. Characters seem to die or survive purely at the author's whim, and the connections to a decades-old murder case and an attempt to start a war just felt wrong...so did the ending, with that stupid boat crash. Even though I didn't like the story of this volume, the artwork was great, and there were a few bits of character development that were very good. Overall, worth reading, but a slight disappointment.

The Derrick Storm in the graphic novels isn't like the one in Storm Front or Wild Storm. In the novels he's smart and heroic. In the graphic novels he's a wiseass, bumbling buffoon. After I finish the next graphic novel, I'll need to read Storm Front and Wild Storm to cleanse this Derrick from my brain. A bit more ... goofy/far-fetched than the first two. Felt like a little too much story for the space it was given. And the ending - well, I wasn't a huge fan of the very ending. In this Derrik Storm graphic novel adaptation, we find Derrik in a boat, after having sold his investigating business, figuring out who "The Fear" is and how far does it go. Derrik finds out what really happened to his mother and looks for the help of his former CIA handler, Clara Strike. In this adaptation we see a TV show similar to Castle being made (within the book). I absolutely love the story line and the artwork is amazing. Can't wait to get my hands on the rest of these books. I'm a big fan of the Castle TV show, unfortunately this book didn't live up to that expectation. It does a reasonable job of nailing the comedy seen on TV but unfortunately the case being investigated is boring, the events rather predictable and the characters fairly uninteresting. I think I will steer clear of Derek Storm from now on. I'm a big fan of the Castle TV show, unfortunately this book didn't live up to that expectation. this is a stupid, cheesy comic, but the LOLs ..... a fictional writer, writing a fictional book, about a fictional person in a fictional world ahhhhhhh........ seriously, just google it and get sucked into the nothingness that is richard castle (oh, and nathan fillion) :)

Too much dialogue and writing for nothing... Story was overly simplistic, not quite as humorous as the first two volumes of Derrick Storm, and I could have done without Derrick's father.
